What about the washing machines? Or are they too small a niche?

Somewhat more seriously, I know that Linux support for the editor has been requested in the past - maybe that's the major announcement?

There is too much evidence to the contrary in the several page thread of people asking why it hasn't happened yet.

Oh...all I really knew was that it had been requested, and nothing else. I'll have a look at it when I'm not at work.

Most of the posts I consider evidence are by Graham. Some of his posts, such as 194 and 228, seem to indicate that companies aren't really interested in an editor on Linux.

If Unity was going to go public, maybe all the Linux fans can buy enough stock to have a controlling interest, and then make Unity do the Linux editor?

That's the problem with public companies. No wonder Ubisoft is making another Assassin's Creed game after that disaster.
Probably most shareholders see the company as a source of income and have no idea how game industry works.

"Due to the fact that everyone now needs unity we will be going pro only"
Huge roar then realization hits ..then silence...crowd turns...
Then you'll see eggs being thrown...not really sure why people brought eggs..

Nah, you've all got it wrong. The big announcement will be that instead of just gray with free and black with pro, there will be twelve more color options available, each for an individually licensed price. ;)

Or maybe Unity is going to buy out the now bankrupt Radio Shack and turn all those abandoned stores into learning centers with classes and game jams. That would be cool.

I really like the idea of only having 1 version of Unity. Keeps it simple and consistent. No need for Unity employees to spend time figuring out what features should go into free and which shouldn't. Time better spent elsewhere.

So... Ditching Unity Free, making Unity PRO free for educational/personal use?

How much of the .NET framework is that though? I wouldn't be suspicious of it if it didn't call itself .NET Core.

I thought they were moving to C++ with their new IL2CPP build pipeline, with C# and .Net for in editor work.

It's that thing where you go to google maps and switch to show roads instead of terrain, Graham.

I seriously hope that the announcement of Unity being revealed as a cover up for SkyNet doesn't get leaked..... oh.

Technical announcements are common, a "major announcement" would be about licensing and prices or a acquisition.

Maybe they are going to acquire Blackberry, then add twin joysticks to all their phones for gaming and really fast navigation of business apps. It will certainly improve the uptake on the use of the BB10 deployment option.

Maybe the learn team could hire that random guy on the internet that redid the Roll-A-Ball tutorials for the new UI tools?

I have it on reasonable authority that he would be willing to leave his day job to work full time on Unity tutorials.

This is probably not what the announcement is about. I'm convinced it's toasters, based on how fast Khaleesi has been closing down new threads specifically discussing this platform.

Announcing a month in advanced that the CEO will have a major announcement is pretty exciting. I am guessing it will be Unity 5.0, but it is really fun to speculate about what the announcement could be.

You didn't notice the black Unity Technologies badge? I'm pretty sure Unity Technologies has some idea about the announcement. It's probably poor practice to say "we have big news next month" then scramble to come up with something new to share.

I always need to exclude time travel as an option before I consider other (frankly, really boring) explanations.

Besides, even if he (allegedly) works at Unity, how does he KNOW, what the announcement is going to be? Before the announcement actually happens, anything goes (they might change it or postpone it). Hence, time travel is the only explanation.

(PS: I know who Aras is, maybe I should have included some emoticons in my previous post that it's clear that I'm joking?)

I knew it... Unity is going to supply use with Minions. They'll write the code and create the games for us. That's pretty close to the "Create MMO Button" some have been dreaming about.

Because senior, and long-term employees contribute to these decisions and plans. JR is new, and uses people he trusts to help with the decision making.

Also, if at Lamborghini's GDC press announcement they said that if you drive your existing car (any make) to a Lambo dealer you can hand it in and drive off in a free Gallardo, I'd hope that the manufacturing teams, and the dealership sales teams all know in advance, because there would be lots of work to do.

Be careful of officially feeding a hype train of unknown destination. It will be scheduled to be on the moon before it leaves the station. However, I am glad you're happy with what's coming.

Another guess might be more open source parts of the engine.

It's hololens support in Unity. Dev kits will run upwards of $2500 and only available to big publishers. Meh...

I love Gallardo's too but I also can not drive.
Failed my practical test three times a few years ago and gave up.
My wife drives though so it is pretty convenient when we go out for a few drinks. ;-)

Pro will be free but we will need to pay a dollar for every time we hit the play button in the editor.
