https://www.magicleap.com/ Finally, looks like something will be released in 2018. I'm just gonna assume Unity will have some kind of support for it
From the link here, I'm guessing, yes. https://www.smartrecruiters.com/MagicLeapInc/80558047-unity-developer
All VR/AR headsets make you look like a complete and utter toolbox so I'm not sure why anyone would think this one would be any different.
Is that the thing that originally started its development at valve? The one project lead by an ex-valve employee that then did crowdfunding and took forever to deliver (I'm not even sure they ever did). Yeah, go hard or go home!
Modern cellphones aren't much better, they're just smaller. The only reason we don't think people look completely ridiculous in each other's eyes is because we've fully normalised them. We're not going to see the same with VR/AR headsets because they're completely niche products.
It looks like Magic Leap are using a light field technology, which could be quite limiting early on as you need to render multiple images that are combined to create one image. And early reports indicate that the Magic Leap 1 glasses have a small FOV similar to Microsoft's HoloLens in size. Unless they have built some bespoke light field rendering technology as well e.g. a LFGPU (Light Field Graphics Processing Unity)?
If you are dealing with business guys all bets are off. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/10/magic-leap-raises-500-million https://www.theverge.com/2016/12/8/13894000/magic-leap-ar-microsoft-hololens-way-behind
Venture Capitalists will gladly fund anything they see as "disruptive" regardless of whether or not it has a place in the market that it seeks to disrupt. Just look at the Juicero.
Here's a good read on Magic Leap and the tech behind it https://www.rollingstone.com/glixel...ing-magic-leaps-mixed-reality-goggles-w514479 . Takes time to read but it's worth it. This has potential to be a really big thing IMO. No one has done anything similar before.
People keep telling me it's not a scam but so far I've only seen them raise money and make "journalists" write about AR like it's the second coming of Jesus.
Yer such a guru. My boss went to look at Magic Leap and they are letting us use one for development of our software packages.. they are amazing according to him. Extremely useful in the AEC industries. Beyond the other HMD's in quality of image and resolution. What makes you and the nod in agreement crew smarter than venture capitalists who have millions to toss at good ideas expecting a many fold return? because you post here?
We are getting one. I will report back when i get to experience it firsthand. Bossman says it is amazing. We have at least one of every HMD and XR glasses released or coming to the market. He say this beats them all.
It is real and it is very high quality. It uses different tech based on diffraction grids and swivellable nano-mirrors IIRC.
This among other devices are experiencing an XR Cambrian explosion where the environment is full of predators, everyone fights for food and there is great device evolution / diversity so I agree with @ippdev, that investors are likely to put money where they expect return. Some things will fail, others not. People should just enjoy being alive in a period of great technological change.
