So, LD's in a few days. Who's in?

Not sure yet if I'll participate, I really want to though. I've done two of them so far, 26 and 30 if I'm not mistaken.

I want to when I can devote more time to it. I think it would be a great experience. To do a LD style a person would need to pretty much devote their entire weekend to it. I could do maybe 10 to 12 hours over a weekend. Hmm... a mini breakout calibre of a game maybe.

I'm in, most likely - but unfortunately a lot of the Saturday is taken up for me :(

One of my suggested themes placed 4th in Round 2 voting though yay :) There's a discussion going on at the LD site where I mentioned Round 1 top themes have a bit of an advantage. I originally voted "You can't stop moving" as -1 and then when I saw it was the top theme of that round, I started thinking of ideas for it just in case... and I thought of one that I now really like, so that theme is now my favourite one.

My team's in for the 7th time (3rd time using Unity). Should be fun!

Kinda hoping the theme doesn't end up being "Pluto's Heart", but it is looking that way at the moment.

I'm probably in again. I tried it in HTML5 last time and wasn't happy with my results at all. I'm likely going to use Unity again this time.

I seriously doubt I would be able to make anything bug free in 48 hours, maybe I'll make something for the 72 hr jam though, just for kicks.

If it was 48 hours of actual dev time that would be enough to do something fairly cool. 48 hours total time now that is a big difference. I'll need to basically schedule it some weekend and tell girlfriend, family and friends don't plan on hearing from me or seeing me this weekend at all Don't text. Don't call.Actually I'd just turn phone off. Just seems pretty extreme really. Probably caters more to teenagers.

I liked You Are The Monster. There were a few others I liked too, anything that would make uncommon gameplay.

Heck, if thats actually the theme I would be really motivated to participate =)

I forgot it was starting this week so I missed the voting except for the final round. I thought it was next week thanks to me hearing about release dates for game updates and whatnot on the 27th. Like the past few Ludum Dares, I may or may not participate.

:) I'm going to bed now. I'll be lying in bed thinking of what I could possibly make for the Ludum Dare. A couple ideas already popped into my head but the hard part is making a game fun. You can't just slap a player into a situation and have em start killing things with no purpose, no reason for doing what you are doing.

Sounds like fun. However with my various commitments to family and society these sorts of concentrated events have never worked for me. Best of luck everyone.

Haha just ignore that :p It's just been something I've been noticing in some games people have been trying to stick on steam greenlight that Jim Sterling has been reviewing. Maybe it's just me wanting more in games. I mean, some games do just fine without an overall purpose (like simple flash/web games). But when your main objective is to do the same thing that you done in thousands of other games, in the exact same way, it gets kind of old. It's something I want to try to avoid in the games that I make although it's really hard.

Blah, for some reason I'm having trouble with this theme. Not coming up with anything I'd actually like to make. Only the basic you are a big monster eating npc's or similar ideas. Not fun.

A puzzle game where your inputs also control the enemies movement.

A detective game where it turns out you were killing people in your sleep and you must convict yourself.

Planning terrorist attacks. (Possibly as a trainer for counter terrorist forces if the theme bothers you).

Destroying things as a massive boss monster is always fun. Rancour Rampage anyone?

Any FPS that throws you face to face with the families of the soldiers you've killed

    A labyrinth escape type game

    ...

And for the win, reverse PAC man where you are the monsters defending your dots.

Which is pretty much why I said what I said earlier. Anyone can make a game where you just mindlessly kill your enemies but there really needs to but "more". Either have characters upgrades, a story, or something. I want to make something but can't think beyond the initial game mechanics.

There doesn't necessarily have to be anything past the initial mechanics. Especially if the mechanics are something other than mindlessly killing things. @BoredMormon came up with some sweet ideas already.

Idea: You're one of 5 people in a locked-room murder mystery and you already know you're the guilty party.

Idea: You're doing something which you're told is solving a problem, but at some point you figure out that it's actually *causing* the problem and have to undo it.

Idea: Life as a video game character. The standard action game you describe (a protagonist mowing down legions of "bad guys"), but where you play as one of the bad guys instead of the protagonist. Your aim is simply not to get butchered as they tear through each level. However, the protagonist gets the magic ability to load games every time they die, so the only way to survive the whole game is to make sure they win, but without getting killed by them...

This sounds like a great little game... but how do you build mechanics around it such that it isn't disappointing?

I think the appeal of this sort of game is in the possibility of creativity and interesting interpersonal interactivity, but games have trouble with delivering that sort of thing, which leads us back to either killing stuff or jumping on stuff.

I'm out - I just can't get a solid gameplay concept for this theme. I was working on a Limbo art style though:

That looks good, I knew what it was instantly. I ended up with....

Spawn. Intro cutscene. Open a door. Walk into the next room. Tap on the glass, a fish comes by! The end.

I had my heart set on making a horror game, and this was the 1 theme that made that difficult lol. I had 3 main ideas...

    1.
Post apocalyptic future where fishmen consider mankind monsters for polluting the oceans, and you are being hunted because of that. (sir, you are being hunted rip off)

    2.
You go to another world and there you are considered a frightening alien while to us the life forms on that planet are terrifying. They try to hunt and kill you because you are considered a monster. (planet 51 rip off)

    3.
Diplomacy simulator: same controls as surgeon simulator, except you're piloting a drone in a foreign country, mocking the inefficiency of drone strikes. This idea was dropped from consideration because I'm afraid of my government.

I settled on the fish one and the scope creep was real. It was the 1 theme I didn't want to work with, I really wanted to make a horror game.

Woohoo! I made a conversation system and it took 8 hours! Not sure how I feel about that...

Hope I can get something finished on this... Taking longer than expected but seems to be coming together alright.

That's kind of the point of a Jam - to try new things. Don't be too worried about if it's going to work, just try something and put it out there. That's a part of the reason it's only a weekend.

If anyone is wondering, it takes *way* longer to write a game with narrative than you think.

I think that what the dragon feels like is dizzy. That GIF has it doing loops over and over and over...

More seriously: Looks like an interesting little game you managed in the weekend. Congratulations.
