    Hello Unity forums!

Can anyone point me towards RTS games (not RPGs or turn per turn games) where customizing individual units is one of the main game mechanics?

Impossible creatures comes to mind, warcraft got some of that (with heroes mainly). Any other examples ?

Thanks, and have a great day!

    Warzone2100
    Free to play.
    Contains extensive research tree mechanics.
Alows units' parts assembly and production of these.
    Theme: future tech.

Pretty old games, but you could build all units from parts.

Particle Fleet from Knuckle Cracker did this. You could customize ships from the bottom up. The game encouraged you to design and use different ships for different purposes. While in theory you could design and build a single super ship, in practice it was simply too expensive to complete, and you needed to start the game off with a bunch of smaller ships built for specific tasks.

The game wasn't particularly good. Knuckle Cracker tends to focus on enemies that don't use AI. This worked well with Creeper, but it tended to fall flat with Particles.

Thanks a lot for the replies. Never heard of Warzone2100 and the Particle Fleet.

Went to check Knuckle Cracker games and it seems to be the closest to what i had in mind.

@Kiwasi do you mind elaborating your point please? From what i saw in the videos, the player appears to be fighting against waves of enemies rushing in his direction. Is that what you mean by no AI ?

Yep! I was actually on the QA team for Earth 2150. You research chassis, weapons, ammunition, defenses, etc, and them mix and match your own units.

So in Creeper World the AI is literally a viscous sludge. Its totally predictable in its movements. And it builds and travels according to fairly standard fluid dynamics. Most of the enemy in Particle Fleet is particles. These move according to to basic Newtonian physics, they keep travelling in the same direction until they hit something. At which case they are either absorbed or bounce.

I've admired Knuckle Cracker for a long time for managing to create indie RTS games, without hitting the normal roadblock of a weak AI.
