Localization works fine in the Player, but not in a compiled build

    Hi everyone, I've been using Localization 0.10 for the last three days.

    Everything is setup and works nicely in the unity player but once I export the build, the language remains in the default one and the Dropdown doesn't appear to do anything.

    I followed these steps.

    and I am using this dropdown - Make a basic Locale selection menu

    Could this have anything to do with : Window/Asset Management/Addressable Assets? From what I understand that is only for the player- but since _something_ is not working...

    Anyone has experience with exporting a build with this basic setup?

    I think everything was working great until i build that Addressables stuff

    Hi,
    Could you try changing the addressable group naming to full name plus hash. Select the groups in the addressables window and expand the bottom Tab for the option. Then do a rebuild.

    hi Karl, I am willing to try anything, but i have no idea where to change "the addressable group naming" please give me a visual example - I'm not a programmer. ( sadly ) and this is pretty over my head.

    Sorry I'm not near a computer at the moment.
    Click the header items in this window and it will select the group in the inspector window.
    The option is near the bottom inside of a foldout.

    Ok, I changed it to Filename then - Build - new build - Default build script.

    I still have the same errors.

    I tried the Append Hash to Filename, then - Build - new build - Default build script.

    again, the same errors.

    Ok one last thing. Go into the package manager and add the addressables package so it is on the latest version.

    Also how long is the file path your are running the game in?

    Could you try running the build from a much shorter path?
    like F:/
    Theres a long standing issue with Addressables and long file paths on Windows. I thought it had been fixed but I encountered it today as well

    sure, but please note, this issue is now in the player - so now i am testing via the player and not making a full build.

    Ill make a full build for your test.

    OK- Creating a build and starting it from f:/test/ here but again changing the language did not work.

    This was resolved by : Select each item in blue, and change the red value to match Append Hash to filename. Then do a Build/Clean Build/All and then Build/New Build/Default Build.

    The 'Append Hash to Filename' fixed the issue we were having too using Unity 2021.1.0f1, Localization 0.10.0, and Addressables 1.16.16

    Everything worked in the editor but no localization strings or assets would update in a build.

    On 2019.4.4f1 localization worked. After update to 2021.1.1f1 it still worked, but new strings I added to table gives "missing translation". I rebuild addressables and any translation just stopped showing at build, but worked fine in editor. I did previously mentioned steps, but there was no result. Now I found out that there is an issue with System Locale Selector. I set the Specific Locale Selector first and it works fine.

    'Update' Ok, now I moved System Locale Selector back and it works fine. No clues.

    I'm not sure I understand. What's wrong with the system locale selector?

    Looks like addressable groups are broken. Can you try deleting the AddressableAssetsData folder and then using the Addressable Analyzers to regenerate all the groups. Make sure you have a backup before you do this.

    The Addressable Analyzers did fix the editor errors.

    Did you build the Addressables for Android? Switch to Android player and then do a build. If thats not the case then I would need to take a look at the project.

    I don't know if that's it but in the AdressableAssetsData folder, i have a folder called "Android" with one file called "addressables_content_state"

    If it isn't, how do i do that ? I am not sure to understand properly what you want me to do.
    if it is, how do you want me to share my project ? It has to stay private. It is my enterprise property.

    EDIT
    Yes, the addressables are used in an Android context -- Oculus, as i told you before.

    Hi Karl_jones,

    I solved the problem by trying again to build the addressables.
    This time, i did "Clean Build => All" and then "New Build => Default Built Script"

    Hi,

    I don't know if the right approach is to kick a this thread back into gear but I will try.

    When I'm using Localisation I have this weird problem where it seems to work fine until I add the Localize String Event to the thing I wanna change. As soon as I do that I get seven errors and I have no real shot at them going away. Anyone has any idea?

    Following several tutorials / unity documentation as closely as I can but as soon as that steps occurs Its done.

    Hey Karl,

    I'm using the absolute latest LTS so 2020.3.33f1. Should I go down to another version where the bug doesn't exist? If so do you have a good idea of which version?:)

    Hey, Thank you for the answer. 2020.3.31f threw the same error at me. 2020.3.26f1 works though.

    I have one problem however that I might be able to ask you about.

    When I use the {smart} (and its clicked in) I dont get up the "Format Arguments" part of it meaning that I can't use the {Smart} thing. Another bug or me being dumb?

    No sorry, I was reading from the wrong one. Thank you for the quick answer, I bet that I will sort it out soon.

    Problem is that there now is a second problem so I can't really try:

    I might as well send this since if it's not only on my side then it's a bigger problem.

    When opening a new project now I get the following when trying to GIT URL Localisation:

    I've now tried it in 3 different Editor Versions, all give the same response when trying to add it. Started an hour-ish ago.

    That's strange. Can you try manually modifying the manifest.json file in the Packages directory to use 1.2.1?

    Hey again, you're fantastic at answering, thanks for that. I could add it by changing the manifest.json file. I'm still getting the other errors when trying the Package Manager way, so I will log it over here and get back to you if it seems to be me being stupid or if I can find a pattern/other stuff about it.

    Thanks. I have asked our QA to also check the add via git method. We had a corruption of the package manager data when we did our last release so it may still be the leftovers of that causing problems.

    Hey Karl, I figured you might want to know that it now works. I haven't changed anything and the package manager Localisation now works on the three different Unity Editor versions that didn't yesterday. :)

    No clue what it was about but doubt it was on my end but can't tell 100% it wasn't.

    There were some issues with the package service yesterday but they have all been resolved now. So it was a problem on our end.
