Load Unity 2018.x assetbundle with Unity 5.6 build possible?

I'm in a strange situation where I have to use an old version of unity (5.6) to load an assetbundle built with Unity 2018. I have no control over this.

Is this possible, and if so, how can it be done?

It is not supported.

 

it might work if you're using 2 versions that are pretty similar, but the difference between 5.6 and 2018.x is probably huge.

Also, from my experience, they are not really doing the best job documenting whether compatibility should break, so when you assume that things should work, think again (and test!) because it might not be the case.
