    Hello,

I'm French, my English is bad, Sorry.

The subject this time is Linux and the Video Gaming (Exemple : Steam, Steam OS ..) (See Korben.info !),

    Why ?

But Linux is Free, Open Source :)

I saw many questions on your Forum terms Unity and Linux.

WHY DO NOT YOU CREATE A UNITY WEB PLAYER ON LINUX ?

There have been many requests !

Find "linux" on Unity 3d FeedBack

Linux Video Gaming is the Futur !

    and

    Unity Engine is also.

I say this because I'm going under Linux there are some months.

AND NOW, I CAN'T PLAY A UNITY WEB PLAYER GAME (ON LINUX MINT) :'(

I know, I know, WineHQ exist but it is very slow :[

    Best regards, LinuxRush.

    # My nickname come from a unity web player game that I loved when I was on windows

You can create a Linux build for desktop.

If you read through previous threads, you will find that there is a upcoming issue that UT is dealing with for the WebPlayer on Mac/Win. I wouldn't expect any interest in a Linux web player until they have sorted that out first.

Sorry, UT refers to Unity Technologies, the company that creates Unity.

Chrome is ending support for the plugin technology that the Unity Web Player currently utilizes. Effectively at the end of next year, Unity Web Player won't run in updated versions of Chrome. Unity is working toward a solution, but nothing currently announced.

    Thanks
    I did not know that.
For your previous post, it is possible to create a Virtual Machine or Emulate a Browser and its plugins ..
But for me, on a old ultrabook (<2005), I haven't sufficient RAM to launch a Virtual Machine.
and for them emulators, they exist only one, "WineHQ", it's pretty lame, full of beug, and very (very) slow.

    I end up stuck

Unity Web Player will never work on Linux ?
Or we must make do with a lame Emulator / Runing an application very (very) greedy (CPU, RAM ..) ?

I don't think the current web player will ever come to linux because of the above news about browsers dropping support. Also they brought linux desktop publish before web plugin which sounds even more so that web wont ever come.

Customers of Unity who want to support games under Linux can build a standalone application that runs on Ubuntu.

No, you aren't! Have you bought Unity? If you are only using Linux, your are clearly not a client. If you were, you could build for Ubuntu.

NaCl builds for Chrome work in Linux as well. Just to give you a hint. This is a forum for Unity3D users, not for gamers.

Actually, there is program for Linux which allows you to utilize the Unity3D web-client. It is called pipelight, and it was originally designed to pipe silverlight running under WINE over to run natively under the Linux based web browsers.

    Installation instructions
    Enabling Unity3D

There was an issues which I ran into. I am using Linux Mint 16 (64-bit); you will need to install the 32 bit dri libgl module (libgl1-mesa-dri:i386).

Under Debian and Ubuntu, the string to install this would be :

    `sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri:i386`

Hi. Found this thread while looking for solutions to this problem.
Are you guys working on a Linux version yet?
    It's really frustrating.
Like someone mentioned above, it used to work. Now none of these workarounds work.
Not the Chrome plugin and not Pipelight.
Pipelight never really worked with Unity. It would stutter and be all choppy.

Since WebGL is the future and works on Linux too there will be no remarkable additions or changes to Web Player platforms.

Graham, that is not really cool to say the truth. I mean basically you are saying, webplayer is anyway obsolete since we can always build a normal executable .... We all know this is not the way to go and webpplayer is one of the coolest things Unity3D supports. You can see that this is NOT the way to go and not a really valid answer. I mean everyone discriminates LINUX and then aims the finger at it that not enough people use it .... look in the mirror for the reason, lol. With arguments like this you are one of the army that makes sure it always stays so. While I understand your point of view when it comes to the developing of Unity3D, lots of costs for no income and have to say I would possibly do the same. I cannot really share your point of view from the consumer side. Look at Steam, LINUX is growing. Also LINUX on mobile platforms is about to come. So this seems to be a bit shortsighted. Please understand this more as a friendly pointer to upcoming developments, than as trying to attack you. Of course we all love you for your appreciated work you do. I just had to write this after I read your "sly dog" answer, which made me laugh a bit btw.

That's why we have WebGL. It is the replacement for the web player.

Why wouldn't it work on Linux? WebGL is browser-based. If you want to verify, try the free game HexGL.

Ok, lol, sorry i am new, I think I cannot really distinguish them. Hey @Graham Dunnett , you should have pointed us at this then :)

Then I don't understand the whole thread, it is pretty obsolete, no ?

However thanks a lot @Ryiah to point this out, I will read up immediately. Since I really would like to have games accessible on LINUX too. that is cool news.

You may want to check the date on his post. Unity 5, released on March 2015, is when we gained WebGL support. ;)

GAHHH, ok, this always confuses me in Forums as I think the ones on top are the most recent, while they are there because one answer has been recent, lol, Thanks for pointing this out too, lol.

Oh don't worry. I didn't notice it until you asked why he didn't mention it. Then it occurred to me why he may not have. :p
