This week our team at Startup Games (UoP student-led games development team) entered into the EDGE Create Challenge, sponsored by game engine manufacturer Unity, submitting the game 'LEMUR FEVUR' for consideration. The theme of the contest was the word 'edge', Tim Langdell is probably seething at that factoid so good thing we kept 'edge' out of the title, eh?

Having only a few weeks to concept an idea, code, create assets and work in real time(our team stretches from Cheney, WA - Toronto, CA - Portsmouth, UK - India meaning 5am finishes for the UK trio) meant we hadn't been able to include all the features that will be in the final version later this year. We have however, a slightly buggy and very basic build of the core feature of the title over on our site which you can play here. *note, it requires the Unity Webplayer to be installed - which you're prompted for, is safe and you can read about that here.*

Some info about the basic concept:

"LEMUR FEVUR IS A PLAYABLE CONCEPT WHERE THE AIM IS TO CAPTURE AS MUCH FRUIT FROM THE BOUNTIFUL TREE AS POSSIBLE BEFORE IT FALLS OVER THE EDGE. THE MORE YOU COLLECT, THE HIGHER YOUR SCORE MULTIPLIES. IF ONE GOES OVER, YOUR MULTIPLIER BREAKS AND YOUR SCORE TOTAL COLLECTS AT THE BOTTOM RIGHT. THEN YOU START AGAIN.

HINT #1: YOU CAN ONLY CARRY ONE ITEM OF FRUIT AT A TIME.

HINT #2: DEPOSIT THE FRUIT IN THE TREE HOLE."

Note - There is a basic scoreboard included in this version which tracks local scores only with no names. In the meantime why not either post a screenshot of your high score on our Lemur Fevur Facebook or Twitter accounts using the hashtag #lemurfevur- it'll help us build a bigger picture of how people are playing, and the maximum score people are hitting.

    Known Features Bug list:

    • Once you hit 22K in a single multiplier the score will break on to two lines - should have caught this really but your score will total to the correct amount on the total score panel at the bottom of the screen.
    • The jump (and associated elements) aren't finished and look a bit pants.
    • Fruit drop is inconsistent and you sometimes have to wait.
    • Multiplier is capped at eight. This will change later in the year.
    • You will lose your multiplier as the game will inevitably overwhelm you with impossible odds.

Please keep in mind that we are unable to implement any changes in this product for one calendar month, until the judges of the contest state that the hands-off period has expired.

If you feel you have anything to say about the game, bugs you've found, features that would work (we're sure we haven't thought of everything) the design of the site. Anything at all - hit the feedback button on the Lemur Fevur hub, or the Contact link up top. We honestly want feedback so we're able to do well by the people we want to make games for - you. So, thanks and happy collecting folks.

Cute graphics and such to start. One question though, why do you need to press any buttons to pickup the fruit? It doesn't seem like there is a point, might be more flow to just being able to run over the fruit.

@quesntinp there are various elements that we didn't have time to include in the concept demo, the point of pressing a button to pick up a piece of fruit is so the player can choose what fruit they want to take back to the tree. e.g. apples are worth the least and watermelons are worth the most. If the player didn't have a multiplier they could use all of the apples on the scene to get the multiplier up and then start collecting the fruits which are worth more to then calculate to a higher score.

    Thanks for your feedback! :D

@tictox myself and the lead programmer are now working on the file sizes of the content. What currently causes the large file size is the soundtrack.

    Thanks for your feedback :D
