Larger scaled animation exercises?

I was flirting with the idea to expand my horizons to bigger animation projects before I'd try out making short films. But I honestly can't think of what I could make outside of longer lip sync tests and whatnot. There was an animated azarpro music video I wanted to try out, but I don't know if it is safe to do thanks to copyright and whatnot. (Something I'll most likely scrap since the odds of me making koowsomegle one as a test are paper thin at this point.)
Is there any sort of longer animation exercises I could do before I have enough material for an animated short film?
