When I first saw these WIP shots back in January, they inspired me.

I'm not much of an artist, and I had pretty much given up on creating my own character models and environments. But these shots made me realize it's possible to convey your ideas -- complete with lots of style -- using simple shapes. And you didn't have to go full Minecraft-style, either.

That said, nothing I've created looks this good in engine. I don't know if it's my material settings, lighting, quality, or what, but they just look... not great.

So the sooner you can share with us any of your tips or techniques, @Isla3d.net, the better. :p

Which has run it's course - been played out completely and isn't appealing anymore.

I agree with Schneider21- this 'style' is refreshing and quite appealing with the interesting lighting you have setup. Nice work.

Something that I was thinking about lately (NEED YOUR FEEDBACK) :

    -Kingdoms Of Dwardomar Online-

All of these features that I planned for KoD but Online

    -Follow main story
    -Follow numerous side stories
    -Do quests (with your friends)
    -Explore world
-Gather army (team up with friends)
    -Build fort
    -Easter eggs

    Every week small update
    Big update every month

Well first, I'm confused... Is it Kingdoms of Dwardomar still, or is it Adventurous: Castle Builders? KoD is much better, in my opinion.

I personally don't get into online games as much. I want to so bad, but they just don't grab me. For example, I'm a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls series, but I tried getting into Elder Scrolls Online and it just feels bland, lifeless, and lonely. It's like in order to make the world feel like it includes everyone, it ends up feeling personal for no one.

So my vote is for single player, but I may be in the minority here.

I am with you in the minority -
Love single player games - online has never appealed to me - even when I really tried real hard to like them.

I like them both, I would have to see the new one in action against the old one to give a better opinion. Maybe a screenshot of them side by side in the world would be nice. :)

There are paid services available to help manage your campaigns, but I can't speak to their effectiveness, having never used one.

If you want my advice, though:
    • Make sure you're ready. You should have a decent community before launching your campaign. You need those people to give you a big boost at the campaign's start to give you the momentum needed to cross the finish line. Otherwise, it becomes very difficult to get the numbers you need.
    • And by community, I mean everywhere. This thread should not be your only avenue of communication. You should have a website, possibly with forums, Facebook page, Twitter account, etc. And these places should be active and current.
    • Show the game. Show as much of it as you can. Don't hold anything back to be a surprise. Your KS campaign is the time when you need to pull out all the stops and get people on board and needing your game. Lots of screenshots and a great video will go a long way.
    • Attention to Detail. I believe English is a second language to you. To be safe, run all of your text by a native English speaker with great writing skills (ahem...). You don't need people to be distracted from your pitch by something silly like a typo or strangely worded sentence.
    • Post frequent updates. Have them prepared ahead of time. Plan them to be exciting tidbits that while not essential, give people the impression the game has depth already, just waiting to be discovered.
    • Be smart about rewards and stuff. Look at successful KS campaigns and how they handle their reward tiers, stretch goals, etc. Exploding Kittens and Joking Hazard are two recent ones that do a fantastic job at this.
    • Promote, promote, promote. Managing the campaign should be a full-time job while it's running. You should be contacting journalists, posting updates, tweeting, and doing everything you can to get your campaign noticed and get people backing.

Hey Isla - great updates, looking real nice.
The one critique I have is about the character profiles - faces. The faces have no definition/detail so from the side it just looks like a flat rectangle head. I know you recently updated the 'style' and it's nice, but I think the style displayed in post #112 above is more appealing than the current style.
If you consider changing the style slightly to improve the defined profile of the character heads - you may consider just adding one detail to each face that stands out. Maybe one character has a large nose and another one has large geometric eyebrows, and another one has more jutting chin than the others.
    Just a suggestion.

About KS - Schneider21 gave some excellent advice. I would add - if you have a demo build available on day one - I think that goes a long way in convincing people you are up to the challenge and are capable of finishing, which is the biggest risk factor for people supporting KS campaigns. Unknown people (small indie devs) on KS have a disadvantage right off the bat competing against known developers who are trying to secure funds from the same money pot. With a demo build - people can see you are serious and being unknown has nothing to do with your ability to put out a solid product and deliver the game you are creating.
A demo also removes a lot of questions regarding game-play and in-game aesthetics, and is one step above others who are attempting to gain support for there game with video and images only.

Good idea :) Next time I will probably add more details to the face you are right every character needs something that will make him little bit different !! I accept your critique because you are longtime follower :D

Regarding kickstarter ! I am working on kind of small demo , where players will be able to experience game mechanics basically to get idea what is game about :) If you played Pinestripe kickstarter demo that's what I am going for :)

    The art style is awesome!
    I love what you're doing.
If I were to give any constructive criticism it would be that the running animation ( I know this might be temporary animations) can really add to the feel of the art style. It looks like a more jolly and cartoon-ish run might fit better than an action oriented run.

I'll be following your progress on this. Good job!
