This feels like a fairly basic thing, but what I want is to be able to see the state of the scene at a specific point of the timeline, then select other objects and position them. For example, I want an object to be directly behind a character at frame 3000, so I want to be able to go to frame 3000 in the timeline and move the object so that it's behind the character.

From what I've scene, when you click off the Playable Director object, every object reverts to its frame 0 state. Is there a way to keep it at the frame you specified while manipulating other objects?

There is a lock button in the upper right corner of the timeline editor. That should keep the timeline active when you change selection.

Gah! It's so tiny! But yes that's exactly what I'm looking for, thanks!

This should probably be much more obvious. I have been pushing Record on various tracks to hack locking it for months.
