I've been working for the few days on a world based on the Jurassic park game Trespasser,I'm doing a hour or 2 a day recreating the props and locations. This is some of the progress so far,the landscaping isn't nearly finished yet and I haven't added proper trees or plants yet,I'm using this project to learn Unity 3 features more in depth and more about optimizing large scale open worlds.Below is WIP of the monorail station and cablecar lift

Hey wow I loved Trespasser despite how broken of a game it was. Are you just remaking it as far as art assets go or are you planning on turning this into a full blown game?

I'm not totally sure yet,I don't think I know enough about scripting for AI (the dinos) to get that working but would like to at least release it as a explorable environment

I really wish someone could get around to just remaking the entire game and all its physics based glory. That game certainly had potential, best of luck to ya though.

Looking pretty cool. Never played Trespasser, but was looking forward to the new "Jurassic Park: The Game" that was recently released on steam, too bad it got such bad reviews. The idea of walking around a virtual Jurassic Park just seems awesome.

I think the dino was from one of the official games.I found a few randomly online, wasn't animated though was just using it for scale check.

Great update, that scene reminds me of the T-Rex scene in Jurassic park, you just need a baby T-Rex and a tower crane to finish it off. I look forward to exploring the island when it's done. I loved playing Tresspasser.

I'm seeing very nice progression here. Do you plan on putting up a web-player or something at some point so we can explore?

Yeah that's my main goal, should be too far off till a demo.Hopefully will find out from that the performance so I can decided if im doing the whole thing openworld or breaking it up into levels.

    Wow you are MY HERO!!!
I loved trespasser- it was one of the most innovative games I have ever seen- I hope you keep the hand mechanics since that was the most important bit.

In my case I remember I played it up to (level 3 I think) several times, since later on the game would get texture glitches and become really broken/hard/etc

Also, even though I'm a Unity guy, wouldn't Cryengine be more suitable for this since it specializes in forresty environments?

I would love to use cryengine for this to be honest but it doesn't run on my laptop that well,it would be much better suited for the jungle stuff for sure.I'm having to be so careful with adding trees in unity since it causes so much slow down and I know visually this wont compare to the other Jurassic park mod/fan games people or working on using cryengine and source engine. For the arm I really haven't a clue how that would be done, I'm guessing it would be a scripting thing but I wouldn't know where to start with that.
If anyone has an idea how to do the Trespasser arm then jump in (and do it for me lol).

some new images of the environment progress, also a VERY basic short animation test (the model isn't mine),fraps killed the framerate but this is my first attempt at any maya-unity animation.Im figuring out the basic of the animation/importing before I start on looking at how exactly scripting the dinosaur to interact with the player will work (if you know scripting and want to do it for me feel free!)

I'm still a while away from the webplayer demo, lot of small elements to go in plus the dinosaur rigging-scripting.

I'll bare in mind this is still a WIP but just a few notes here.

The rocks don't blend in with that cliff texture at all, it looks a bit off, I'd suggest either changing the cliff texture to be more similar or adding more rock meshes around it to blend it better. As well it feels like it needs more detail, smaller stones, twigs, saplings and weeds would be nice to litter the currently barren ground.

I remember that albertosaurus model :D cool asset, keep up the great work dude its looking awesome.

    Hey Conceptcrash,

The graphics rendering is good. The dino animation is also good. Just asking if you don't mind sharing these info:-

    1. Are you using Unity Pro or Unity Indie version ?

    2. What tools do you use to make the models and do the rigging - Blender or something commercial ?

    Thanks,

Im using Unity Pro,and modelling is all done in Maya. The Dinosaur was free model already rigged I found just to use for a test.

There going to be lot more vegetation but im being pretty careful with the amount, the last project I worked on lagged a lot when I put in plants and grass. My computer isn't that powerful so it may have just been that but im keeping the number of plants down until I can test it on other machines.

Be careful with grass, it is the biggest killer of performance in Unity games. I dont know if that is becouse it is poorly handled in engine, or if it is the same in other engines, but just keep in mind keep the number of blades as low as possible and rather use more trees to cover good ammount with vegetation rather than grass. Keep in mind that even if you get monster machine and put tons of grass it might work for you, but you will keep plenty of players down. Maybe good compromise is to make script that simply allows player to render as much grass as he/ she wants.

Please stick to the 'Original' arm Physics please, and another arm If you must. People don't want to see this as a locked-arms FPS.
Look into the physics of the dinosaurs blinking eyes, open and closing mouths and also there Is a Behaviour system for the dinosaurs, but before released they had there emotions set to 100% Aggressive. The Raptors also Jumped.

There were also allot of destructable structures that where going to be added into the game, please for people like me. Watch 'The Lost world' and 'Jp III'
to get Ideas from, try and make It as close to the Films as you can, don't forget about weathering.

Other that that fantastic work and I hope to play this some-day.

I wont be using the original physics arm,I did think about it but there's to many reasons not to use it.I know a lot of people appreciate what the people who made trespasser were trying to do by having the control but I think it was responsible for the vast majority of the games problems.

I haven't considered destructible buildings yet, would have to look into that,at the moment I'm stuck at the scripting stage for dinosaurs AI,I don't have a lot of free time learn scripting so anyone out there who could help with some simple waypoint scripting feel free to get in touch!

Aright, May you stick to the arm though or go for two arms if you must, that Is what made Trespasser Amazing.

I think some innovative things could be done with animation and the arm and the physics thing could be avoided.

as far as i know grass can kill your performance due to two reasons:

    1) number of draw calls:
adding grass to your terrain will significantly raise the number of draw calls.
but the lower the "Detail Resolution" of your terrain, the lower the number of extra draw calls will be.
of course using a lower resolution for details you won’t be able to paint grass and other vegetation added as "grass" or detail mesh very accurately. but as usually you don’t have to have those things placed very accurately i would not hesitate to work with a pretty low detail resolution.
    e. g. a detail resolution of 256 on a terrain with 500 x 500 m would give you an accuracy of +-2m.
in case you need some plants positioned more precisely just add them manually as individual game objects, mark them as "static" (in order to batch them) and place them on a layer wich will get culled at a proper distance (like 60 m – depending on their size).

    2) overdraw and fillrate:
drawing thousands instances of grass usually creates a lot of overdraw and eats up the fillrate (number of pixels that can be drawn to the screenbuffer).
but unity lets you dinamically adjust the number of instances by changing the value of "Detail Density" which can be found in the terrain settings and is accessible via script so you can adjust it according to the user’s hardware.

    conclusion:
add grass and more details but do it with care.
especially when it comes to set up the detail texture resolution do some tests (simply duplicate your terrain and assing different resolutions), for you can not change the detail resolution without loosing all your efforts on painting grass.

    btw:
although all your screenshots look great i would adjust the fogs’ color to match the sky: just change it from ghrey to some kind o blue ;-)

I think that adding small bushes helped a lot! I were quite warm times so dense vegetation helps a lot! good progress.

    First AI test.
The rex model and rig came from creativecrash,I basically needed something workable to test the script and figure it all out so the whole things very simple and rough (the models wasn't uv mapped or textured also).I done some very quick animating in Maya and really explored the scripts in better detail to get a feel for it and see how the timings between maya and unity worked,as you can see the run cycle is pretty poor and not fast enough.Got help with the scripting from CrazySi so thanks to him for that.
