    Do you think it is, or is not, dropping behind and what makes you think that?

    Is there anything new or coming soon from Unity that really looks amazing (please post links videos)?

    No unless you’re aiming for photorealism which is out of scope for most indie devs anyways.

    What's the point of starting this thread without presenting some substantial information? I'm all for controversial discussions but nobody wants to read another thread full of airy opinions about whether Unity is going up or down.

    Dropping behind what? It's not like there are that many viable alternatives, especially for 3D.

    They may have Multiplayer, Blueprint, Niagara, Nanite, Lumen RTGI, Quixel Megascans Library, Metahuman, Open World Tools, Strand Hair Rendering, and too many more.

    SRP with us :p:cool::cool:
    Jokes aside, I can kinda sympathize with OP seeing how Unity is moving these past few years.
    But with Entities getting closer to 1.0 release scheduled this year, it should enable Unity to finally start developing and innovating their tool set again. Kinematika, AI Planner, DOTS Multiplayer, and many more DOTS related stuffs.

    And acquiring Ziva and Weta might also mean something is planned for the long run.

    I think the flaw is calling anything in this business an Engine War. I mean Unity's made up mostly of services, and so is Epic with fortnite GaaS among other stuff.

    So you don't make a decision just based on engines. What about royalties? And so on. But if you will allow, I'll reframe the question as:

    Is Unity less capable than Unreal at making games? The answer for me is no. In fact Unity's ahead. Why else would I be here..?

    That's 100% correct haha! Yeah it's DOTS. Once I really dug into it, was impressed by the sheer scale I could achieve without much code. That basically saved Unity for me or I'd probably be a bit too jaded. It is hard to get into right now though for a lot of people.

    Can DOTS be used to calculate realtime GI in the background?

    I wouldn't say it's behind overall, but I'm definitely looking forward to a modern realtime zero bake GI solution. Other than that, working in Unity is a blast imo.
