In the past, I've read that Pace InterLok was installed. Is this a necessary install and does it get inserted without the user knowing? Especially if the user wants to only use the free version?

Is there any forced exe that gets intalled with this program? I don't like any application not informing the user that other executables are being installed, like League of Legends with their Pando Media Booster.

Is there anything that isn't necessary to install to just test out Unity for it's developement features?

All versions of Unity require activation. In 3.x and before Pace was used. Unity 4.x and later uses a different licensing system. Pace InterLok was not, and is not malware.
