I want to make a effect like in intelligent qube when a block is destroyed and it shoots shaped beams of light on 4 sides of a square directly into the air. See this video
at 1:15. I tried messing around with particle system but could not get anything close, does anyone know the best way to do this?

looks like cube mesh is scaled and faded out, maybe using vertex colors (top vertices are set transparent)

not perfect (and bit too transparent on top).. but almost

use some 3d modeling tool, paint vertex colors (set top opacity to 0 or so)
    then use additive particle material/shader..

for the fading.. probably need to make custom shader to fade out, or try adjust material alpha.

That's awesome! Do you know how I could do it in just unity without going to a 3d modeling software?
