Let’s take a new glance at the Steam-o-Meter after one week of its release. The great thing is that really awesome stuff like “Powered Gauntlets” and “Challenge Dungeons” have already been unlocked and pushed to be ready for Closed Beta… and now we’re getting so close to the first Dev Humiliation ever. So everyone, keep pushing up the points and unlocking more early content (wouldn't you like to see that cute Marshpuggle?)

Hi everyone, we've got some great updates to share this week, so forgive me if this seems a bit spammy:

First! Autumnwane (CBT3) is around the corner, so be sure to free you schedule on December 14th if you’re interested in joining in.

    Second! City of Steam is coming on Steam's Greenlight project (see more details here), so please vote for us;

    Third! We just got a new Closed Beta Trailer up and running, so please share the video with your friends and help spread the word out;

Alright, enough of that before this gets too long, sorry for dropping so much on your guys at once… I’m glad to hear you thoughts on this though, please let me know what you think if any question is crossing your mind!

City of Steam is one of my favorite mmo game. Here is my review.
City Of Steam is a steampunk MMORPG developed by China-based Mechanist Games. Set in the industrial age, the game features fast-paced hack n slash actions, 3D graphics for web browsers, as well as dungeon-based raids. In the game, players are able to choose one of four classes and nine races to slay monsters, perform quests, and join a team or guild to engage in a series of activities.

City of Steam brings people to the most dangerous adventures into tens of forgotten regions around the central city. With the same rusty colors prevailing in the game, each region has its unique monsters that generate a unique atmosphere. These regions may have many gates, but you wont get out without collecting keys through a correct means. If you dont accept quests in an expected sequence, you will break into these hells unknowingly and lose yourself therein until an open door is found among its numerous gates. And this blind intrusion is not related to any XP or level enhancement, only costing all of your potions.

This is a 3D game running on browsers, so inevitably there are some disconnected moments. But generally, the game runs pretty steadily, leaving you no time to scan the explanation texts at the entrance of a dungeon. The whole gaming world is a grand system of brickwork, woodwork and stonework, but most of the objects are air-slake in a comfortable way. Besides tigers, bears, apes and wild dogs, some of the monsters are both dirty and mysterious, like rats, ash worms, water worms, potato ladybird. As a contrast, bad humans among these evil creatures are sensuously beautiful; the tiny amount of shillings earned is a pile of happily shinning colors, even the battling noise rings pleasantly to the ear.

I really enjoy City of Steam. Congratulations on having a publisher.
Just being a curious, how long were you making your game without investours? (or selling acces into game). Of course if it's public information.

Hi Jog, sorry for the late reply. Actually we spent more than one year developing this game before an investor found us. You can find the story of us through the comment on this Gamasutra article.

    very nice job Ethan,

    quick questions:
1.- how many team members are in this project?

2.- is this project commercially funded by third party or just volunteers indie devs for the love of game making?

3.- what are you guys using for backend server?
is it one of the existing commercial plugins like:; photon, smartfox, ulink etc....
or is a custom made inhouse server?

    Hi, as for your questions:

    12. The project has been years in development, starting with David Lindsay, our co-founder and Creative Lead, and his dream of making this game, just 3 other people, back in 2008. Very small, crappy apartment as an office, a true indie tale. People have joined the team since, then the company got proper investment, and now we have a decent-sized development team (for being indie) working in a proper office. A huge majority of the game was worked on by a team of just 11 but due to the expanding scope of the game and the complete re-writes we’ve been making as result have pushed the team to about 30 developers.

    3. Not sure about this one, I'll ask and get back to you.asap

    Here you go:

No we wrote it ourselves. We started with Sun microsystem's Dark Star server but when Oracle bought the company, that project folded and then we were stuck with an interesting predicament... do we continue developing a dead project that can't really fit the angle we were moving in (more action) or ... back peddle and write our own. We decided on the latter and everything went as well as expected

    OMG OMG!

I remember maybe 1 year ago, when I read here about your development and saw first artwork - what a cool style. Bored some hours ago, I was browsing mmohut.com and stumbeld over City of Steam in a ready version. I just loged in here after more than one year to tell you:

    1) You guys did really really great work!

    2) Many trys in Unity3D I saw since I found the engine are not smooth all in all - CoS is totally smooth in gameplay effects

    3) 1st thing I do playing a new mmorpg is to turn off the music sound - CoS will always run WITH music sound. No effect goes on my nerves.

    4) The loot picking is the best I saw for now as long as I have no chance to test Kyrill. It never miss and also pick move works.

    5) I'm not confused like in many other mmorpgs. Normally I think: What the hell they want from me? Where is this, where is that. Your enbedded tutorials are great.

    6) No grey loot. I really hate that overloaded looting in other games, just crap nobody needs and npc it. Here again you did a great job.

    7) You also did one of the best pathfinding of avatar, additionally the autoroute to quest nps places is great.

8 ) The balance is good enough for what I played right now. I did 4 bosses without party/group and just lost 5% health in fights. I don't know if you adjust the bosses health defense when system recognizes that so have to fight it alone, but it works. I didn't felt frustrated dieing 100 times.

    9) The music is really good and never annoying in my eyes.

    10) All fx effects look great, the teleport works without lag - all in all there was never kinda smallest lag. The data syncronisation is just great for now.

    11) All loadingscreens, items look really cool.

    12) The equipment window is really good. I missed that overview in other mmorpgs.

    13) The quest system is awsome.

Ok, that's the positive part for now. Sure I'll add some minus :D

    1) You keep me in game for more than 3 hours now. I just wanted to look in for some minutes: Bad guys!

    2) I feel a bit like in diabolo view (sure I know about the different ingame cameramodes). I really don't know atm what's my personal problem, but I don't get that ~normal~ 3d mmorpg feeling.

    3) I can't pick up loot that is behind transparent windows like the chat window. Would be cool to be able to pick. In some situations it saves life.

    4) The maps are good, but the picker to move them has a big distance to map. I would fix that and place the picker next to map.

    5) I would leave a little space between acdcept and decline quest conversation. Some people like me really don't like conversation parts. I know it's part of concept.

    6) It would be great to have a target cache. Sorry, but at this point my english suck. What I mean is: When I shoot a box and shoot another the actions should be stored and done one after the other.

    7) I don't know if I'm the only one, but I would love to have a turning view in mouseclicking move mode. When you click left the view should adjust. It's much more comfortable.

8 ) I don't remember what info window it was, but the top of text was truncated. It was kind of description window.

    9) The map is over the inventory. Should be behind the inventory in my eyes.

    10) The equipment window graphics (health etc.) looks kinda inactive.

    11) Turning the avatar (equipment window and creation window) just works over the arrows. I would like a left-click-hold move left right.

    12) I would fade out the glowing key over opend chests. I always think ther's something more to get.

    13) You can't close opend doors. I would like to be able to close a door for emergency on low health.

    14) When I turn around with right-click hold mouse, I see the hand picking icon. Kinda confusing. I always think there is something to get.

    15) Right now I found out I could pick up items while waling over them, but it doesn't work for trade goods materials.

    16) I would like to have an adjusted view(forward) when autorouting to npc.

Maybe you have kinda questions, feel free to contact me: 6thousend@hushmail.com. Please don't write pm, maybe I check this page next years again. ;)

Go on with the good work. It's impressive and you did one of the best Unity 3D titles and also mmorpg titles I saw right now.

Sorry, no more time to write... I've to play some City of Steam... You know that game? ;)
