In the Transform dialog, why do z values seem wrong?

    Hi,

I am a complete Unity beginner.

I have two horizontal planes in a scene, aligned along the x and z axes. Initially, both are on the origin (actually one is at y = -1 simply so I can see both okay). One plane has a z-scale of 150, the other 200. If I wanted to line up the back edges of these planes, I would expect to have to move the larger plane +25 units on the z. This seems to produce only a tiny movement. To get the planes to line up along the back edge, I have to enter +240 on the z, and I haven't got the faintest idea why. This seems to bear no relation to anything I can think of.

The same seems to be true of the camera. To get it into position, I had to enter a positive z value many times larger than I would have expected.

I am clearly missing something really silly here. Can anyone tell me what it might be?

    Kind wishes ~ Patrick

Are you talking about the default Unity plane? The "Plane" you create via the menu is about 10 units wide at its natural scale.

The "Quad" object might behave more like you expect - it's a small, 2-triangle plane that is 1 unit wide when its scale is (1,1,1).

That was part of the problem. I think the rest of the problem was that I had got the plane vertical instead of horizontal, so the camera was looking obliquely at the plane. Doh!

    Thanks for the answer.
