    In your fav scene:

    Build an Empty Game Object.

Add a particle system to it.

    Edit particle system to taste.

Drag to Project and create prefab.

Now attempt to edit it by "Opening" it.

No dice. The amazingly disappeared particle system.

Found the problem. The scene that opens to edit the prefab is zoomed in so far that it takes me 20 rolls of the mouse wheel to see the particles.

How do I change the background colour of the scene that opens up to edit the particles?

Instead of scrolling to zoom, double clicking the root gameobject in the hierarchy view should focus the gameobject. Or select it and press ´f´

This brings up the bug of focus and particles... wherein between pulses or bursts, it zooms into infinitely small, and if the bursts have a wide range at the end, and one is active, it zooms out to a massive extent.

It was because I saw a flicker when doing this that I initially suspected the zoom might be either WAY out or WAY in...

btw... it'd be super nice to have a grid inside the prefab editing scene, so that I remember not to move the object.

It is the default. So unless you changed the colors or something the grid should be visible

I've never seen a grid in Unity. Four different computers... all Macs.

    great, wonderful. Amazing.

    How?

That was the second part of the question. How do I turn it on, if it's off?

Where are the switches and settings for this?

    Possibly related:

I setup my computers for motion graphic design first and foremost. Over the last couple of months I've setup and returns 2 MacBook Pros, and kept a 3rd. Plus I have an older couple here.

Of these, only the oldest ever remembers Unity Preferences. All the others, I've had to (and continue to) reconfigure my user preferences every single boot of Unity.

So things like the colours of the backgrounds in the views, and the settings for which colour picker to use... and which mode, etc. Always, every single reboot of Unity.

I've asked about this oddness elsewhere, but got no response.

I presume it's something I do when installing Maya, AE etc that sets up the machines oddly. Everything else works as it should... I think.

I have no idea about what is, but if you look closely at the attached gif above you see how grid is turned on and off

I didn't even see it as a gif... Sorry!!!

Initially thought it was just another screenshot showing off your grid prowess.

btw, I had to press the grid "button" checkbox 4 times to get it to turn on. First 3 times did nothing. Not even a flash of the grid. I thought I was missing the checkbox in a rush, the first couple of times, then got much more accurate for the 3rd press... nope... nothing. Fourth press turned it on!

The grid. I got in, man!
