Its my first time exporting assets from blender to unity and im having some problems.

I exported my objects from blender in fbx format. When i brought them into unity i noticed that the model is rotated onto its side in the assets folder preview. Also when i try to rotate the child objects of the model, they do a weird streching effect. I am not using apply rotation as when i do the child objects go missing and i cant find them.

Until you get real familiar with the import step, limit yourself to a single object with no sub-child objects. The scaling effect looks like you have compounded rotates, offsets and scales in a hierarchy of objects. ALWAYS have unity scaling and identity rotation at the object level in Blender, or you will have a really bad time.

This guy has a ton of great videos on using Blender3D with Unity3D: it works awesomely, but it has limitations and the only way you will truly understand and learn to work with them is to do lots of different things, building steadily up from the simple cube more complex items.

Ok noted for the future but I still have my current problem. I found that applying scale in blender manually fixed the problem but when I applied scale in the export window it would make the child objects become small or stretched. Without ticking the box everything works. Do I just not tick apply scale when I export?

Again, there's a thousand reasons this would not have the effect you expect, as cascading transforms can do all kinds of weird things, such as cause the squishing you see.

I guarantee you this: if you got it working, over time if you pay attention you will why the other way you tried doesn't work, but without seeing everything in front of me and playing with it for five minutes, I can't just tell you why.
