I'm trying to import Rust into 2019.3.a11 and coming up against freezes. It imports into 2019.1 fine. I was wondering if anything was known that could cause this? Is there any extra info on Asset Database 2.0 anywhere?

The log file indicates that it's importing assets - a few of which import fine - but it freezes on when importing one (never the same one)

What I'm seeing is a freeze in AsyncForceCloseFile (can't get a call stack)

Could it be something we're doing in OnValidate? Is there a way to enable a more verbose logging level?

I have the same issue with a slight variation - for me, a project I upgraded from 2019.2.0f1 opens only if I delete the library. Then it opens - after I close it again and open Unity again it hangs on the same worker thread as you show above. Deleting the library again and opening makes it work.

You can apparently force it to use assetdatabase 1 or 2 using -adb1 or -adb2 on the command line - not sure how these command lines work with Hub tho

I confirm is impossible to import old project in 2019,3a11, unity just lay down in the processes and do nothing. I believe if I wait couple of hours maybe something happen, but no thank you. Things is getting worse and worse with every new release.

@id0 try deleting the library. Would be interesting if it imports then. For me I have to delete the library before every attempt at opening Unity with that specific project. (also, I had it run over a whole weekend - processor was at full run all the time but nothing happened).

fherbst my project is more than 20 gb. I have to reimport every time? It is something beyond of good and evil.

Haha, for sure! Same here. You shouldn't really upgrade at this point, neither do I, was just curious about whether that fixes it for you. I usually only try that by duplicating the entire folder and then deleting the library in the copy.

FYI - still getting this in 2019.3.b1

Just found out you can add an empty adb1.txt next to your Assets folder to force it to use the old Asset Database, which is a usable workaround for now.

Is unity editors performance supposed to get worse as the project (file) size gets bigger? Especially opening the project, deleting or renaming assets etc..?

One thing I can say, since I switched to 2020, editor performance has been much better.

Now I am also very careful not to put junk into the project. I do not import anything that is not required for the game into the main project. I keep a temp folder for temporary stuff and the rule is that it should be able to be deleted at any time.

If I need to import an asset pack (e.g. trees pack), I create a new project (I actually have projects called 3D assets, audio assets, etc.. ) and import it there first. Then I create a scene and drag and drop things I need into that. Finally, I export this with dependencies (still check to make sure things like scripts are unchecked) checked and import it into the main project.

Also, when I import editor extensions I make sure to not import examples or manuals. If I need them, the asset first goes into a separate project and I can play (e.g. learn how to use it) with it there first.

You can try deleting everything in the library (ONLY Library folder, if you are not sure what you're doing, back up the entire project first!) folder. Unity will regenerate this folder and re-import, and usually fix any issues. It make take a while depending on your PC specs.

I'm having a similar problem with constant freezing, and I'm noticing that the Logs ' Asset Import worker' and 'shader compiler - asset import worker' are updated / created every time it freezes in editor mode. It makes the entire tool completely unworkable. This is after I've rebuilt the library, tested on both 2019.4 and the most recent 2021.1.6

Is there a workaround for this asset importer trash? Maybe a way to roll back to whatever system they used before? Maybe Unity should consider stabilizing their product before they launch or work on new features. Do you guys just not have QA, or is that the customers job? Pretty embarrassing. If I wasn't midway through a project I would switch to Unreal. Probably wont be using Unity in any future projects tbh. I love its UI and how organized and modular everything is, but its just too unreliable.

Use Unreal. If you're just starting out, its a better tool with a brighter future. Unity is easier to use and get into, but its pretty disheartening when you run into unresolvable problems like this years into a project.

Pretty much an acre of these the last few days for me.

I get over one, a new one's waiting for me.

My actual productivity has dropped like a rock.

I think I might end up going to Unreal tbh.

It hangs on closing the app, it hangs importing models, an error I got earlier had me shopping (or tryng) for a new GPU.

Yesterday it was SaveAsset() giving me the business.

The day before it was a Render Pipeline Asset removing itself from the settings menu.

    There have been many more.

I've spent 30% of my game dev time debugging Unity.

This still seems to be a problem from 2019 versions all the up through 2021.3.11f1. I frequently get freezes on import which has probably amounted to hours of wasted time manually killing/restarting Unity.

At this point I don't even care about fixing the cause of the freeze - I just want to be able to cancel the import manually and kick it off again without restarting the whole editor in hopes that it works on a second try. I can only assume there's a deadlock somewhere in the asset import worker processes, and don't unlock the editor when manually killed.

Edit: I've found a partial fix that reduces freezing but it still sometimes freezes. See my reply here: https://forum.unity.com/threads/rel...nd-keeps-getting-slower.1228698/#post-8484515
