    You may be interested in the use of Unity in immersive environments, namely the hemispherical iDome.

    This is the demo scene that comes with Unity but it can be applied to any Unity environment.

    That is really cool, but I don't understand why the last step is necessary.

    Couldn't the 4 specially designed meshes simply have the warping built in in order to save the last precious step and get a higher frame rate (as well as slightly less image quality loss)?

    You are quite correct, the last step can be avoided and I have also done that. The reason for not doing it for some of the uses I've made of this is that some people have fisheye projection systems ... and I wanted to initially support those as well. Now I just have both meshes and at runtime one chooses fisheye or warped fisheye.
