I have recently started my journey on game development, but I am having a difficult time coming up with game ideas. Can you please post some game ideas that are small and simple?

The best thing you could do for start is copy something you like or something you know, either by playing or by being popular.
A side-scroll runner, a flappy bird, a bommberman...those are games that can be atomized with ease and then improved or expanded.
Try some of the tutos in the Unity main site, the rollerball, the space shooter or the 2D roguelike start really plain and simple and have plenty of room for improvizing once you are done.

I think the best source of such ideas is to look at old games, particularly arcade games, which were highly constrained by hardware capabilities of the time.

For example, my younger son and I are doing a project this quarter to create a 4-player co-op version of Konami's Scramble. It's quite a simple game, but one I really enjoyed as a youth, and adding local multiplayer doesn't make it significantly harder.

So, go visit an arcade, or play around with MAME for a weekend, and I bet you'll have plenty of ideas.

If you're still at the level of needing tutorials even to get started, then forget about thinking up your own game ideas; just do whatever the tutorials do.

There are a ton of great tutorials for Unity, both from Unity themselves and from third parties. Google is your friend. (If a somewhat creepy friend who keeps track of everything you do.)

Once you've spent a few weeks or months doing tutorials, then go to the arcade and see what inspires you. By that point you'll know how to get started.

Build the Unity Tutorials games. They're all step-by-step, and they provide all the artwork you need to make them. When you've done them all, you'll be able to do almost anything you can think of in Unity, and you'll be bursting with new ideas.

I looked at the tutorials, but I can't find anything basic. I am more interested in 2D.

    Follow these tutorials: http://unity3d.com/learn/live-training

Most of them are in 3D, but those principles apply just as well to 2D games. It gives you a good insight into how a game is made up and what common techniques are used in Unity.

Some of the tutorials even provide you with small games, or parts of games that you could use to implement in your own game. Maybe just watching someone else mess around can give you some ideas for a game of your own.

Let me guess - you popped in Kingdom Hearts and are taking a drink everytime someone says "Darkness?"

That's sure to get you drunk in record time.

It's not music, he discusses game design elements based on experience. Well worth the time, they will make you think & consider things you probably haven't even considered.

You can start with your favorite genres of games. For me that is RPG and open world. Then from there discover how much you alone can do. If you need a team for a bigger project, then get one but find out what you can do by yourself to start. Then check out some of the most popular games out there right now.

using these you can come up with better ideas. Formulate your idea, then start working on creating it. Here is a basic unity tutorial:

I would say start out with an Android based sidescroller. But find something that is different from the rest.

Keeping it simple is a great way to start! A lot of people charge blindly off with 1/8th of an idea and become overwhelmed quickly.

A big part of the battle is learning to think about the way a game is designed. It isn't enough to know that something is fun- your challenge is knowing why it's fun.

Every game has at least 1 goal or objective- and a game's mechanics are the rules that the player has to play by in order to complete the goal. Check out the video below and ask yourself why a player wants to get to the end of a Mario level- what do they get out of it? At what point is a player probably having the most fun?

When you are thinking about designing a small game, it will help you to identify 1 or 2 mechanics that will define the rest of the game. For instance, Mario's 2 main mechanics are running and jumping. There are more mechanics- Death, the timer, points and coins, each powerup, each enemy- (the koopa shell is an especially big deal just because it bounces off things!) But the whole experience centers on Mario running and jumping- pressing right or left, and then pressing jump at the right times. Don't worry too much about all the extra stuff, focus on finding the fun in that core 1 or 2 mechanics, and then all your other mechanics will serve those.

The Unity tutorials are okay. But they are obviously made by good programmers, who are not always good instructors.

Check out the link below. I really like this guy's tutorials. Unity needs to hire him, or somebody else who can explain things exactly like him. He has created a very clear, concise tutorial that builds on itself and results in a fully functional FPS over a period of many videos. I have some experience with C++ but C# is a different beast entirely. I think even if I had no experience coding I could learn to from this tutorial.

LOL! An interesting concept for sure. ha ha.

Not realistic at all considering many hobbyists are far more experienced than the people doing it as Indies. Being a hobbyist is a choice (just making games for fun not for money) not a lack of skills. lol

But realism isn't needed anyway. Be crazy if it took off. N00B Hunter 2016!!!

He narrated the video in an entertaining way (RIP Steve Irwin) but it seems like the kind of behavior one would expect from a 12 year old not what appears to be adult.

Well, on top of it, the idea of someone hunting down newcomers is kind of douchey. While the video is a parody, it's also a great expression of the reason why some people are absolutely opposed to PvP being in their games. For every gamer who beats you, then gives you constructive criticism to be a better PvPer, it's almost like there's four more fake-Irwins hanging out ready to violate your gaming experience. The way he expresses it is only a slight exaggeration of how said PvPers actually act (in my experience, he's actually a bit nicer than some of the jerk-PvPers.)

Yeah I was thinking that when watching the video. Thinking "really guy? You have nothing better to do than be an a-hole?"

I am sure if it weren't for the people like this many more folks would enjoy online gaming. Of course, these kind of people are in the real world too it's just being able to hide behind the computer brings out a lot more of them.

Kind of unfortunate there are so many out there when you really think about it.

What about a resource management game where an indie dev has to balance their time working productively to earn money with developing games & skills part time, to maintain a reputation within the indie dev community, which is gained/lost by the amount of time they spend in the forums?

I have a game Idea but I dont have time to make it now. Lets imagine times 00.BC and Jesus on his road to be crusified, VR game, you becomes Jeses dragin his Cross and seeing all that bad people around you, you have 12 pitstops, Then when you are the end of the road, you change camera perspective to from soldier perspective, and you must take nails and nail jesus to cross, just before you are about nail Jesus a window comes out with paypall option to buy bigger more reliable nails for 1$. OK you naild Jesus, now you must put the cross up, Another window comes up. You can bay rope via paypall with 1$
ok you naild Jesus and and you used rope to put the cross up. Now you change perspective to Jesus Eyes. you see two other dudes on crosses talking about blablabla,, then to progress you text appears ,Read... father why have you forsaken me?. Player must say outlad the prhase. Voice recognition registers if player said that phrase. If player said then hears Voice acting. "Father why have you forsaken me". now once again change in perspective. to soldier eyes. You need a spear. a windows comes up" you can buy spear for 1$ via paypall. once you have it, you must aim and throw. or come closer and just stab Jesus a few times. Mission complited. now once again camera change to soldiers eyes. some envoronmental effects. wind and lighting. some dialogs. OW F*** he was a true sun of a good. and everybody runs away.. Tada! the end

Then after a few months new game sequel
if sombody paid me and i had time i would make such a game for VR users
