I just had my first Asset accepted. What do you guys think? It's a working light switch!

Seems a bit overpriced for such a small game feature, don't you think? :'P

2$ overpriced for a switch that actually turns on the light with animation? Seems great to me! I would buy it but medieval folks did not have light switches.

Congrats on your first asset. :)

Thanks guys! I do plan on making this asset free here very soon. I'm working on a huge doors pack that will open and close with scripts and animations. I feel so much better after reading your guys' replies. The reddit community can be way too harsh sometimes. But anyways, expect my lightswitch asset to be free in about 2 weeks!

Considering the next cheaper price point than $2 that the Asset Store allows is "free", I can only assume you have no idea what you're talking about :). Or you're joking and no one could tell haha.

$2 is the best price I can imagine if the author doesn't want to put it out for free. $5 would be too much.

Prices in the dropdown for price when you submit are: Free, $2, $5, $10, and so on.

i don't feel that's very useful. It's designed only for a light switch. I would prefer a script that can trigger animation/GameObject active/etc. Also the artwork seems not very professional. There are 4 parts of model and 4 individual materials just for one light switch (which is 4 drawcalls). And the material is just pure color diffuse material.

Are there not ways you can make your criticism more constructive?

So, the object is small and has 4 draw calls, which is too many for a small object. Could the OP look for a way to reduce the draw calls? Put the textures on an atlas, for example? And yes, he should use a texture, not just diffuse color. Since his item is more than just artwork (includes animation and scripting), it could be that the artwork is not his strong point.

Hopefully, if we give him constructive criticism, he can make his next object better. I am learning 3d modeling myself and spent weeks and weeks on my first item. Then tossed it and started over. I have friends who have given me advice outside of the unity forums. I never would have had the guts to post it here. lol

One thing I suggest is to post your stuff on the WIP forum before you put it on the asset store. You will avoid a lot of bad reviews and criticism and your artwork will get better.

Still, a good start. The item is not just artwork, but also animation and scripting. To be fair, I have paid 50x more for art packages here that have bad textures. I have had to retexture a lot of what I buy. Fortunately, I am better at texturing than at 3d modeling. ;)

I agree that we should always strive for constructive criticism.

However some of the objections are valid for the following reason: when you charge for your work you are signaling that it is of a certain quality. It is even a kind of guarantee.

There is a big difference between asking for feedback/encouragement, and selling a product, and that difference is more than just the price (here, a measly $2 that few people would begrudge).

There never is a guarantee. The best thing a shopper can do is go to the forums, read the reviews, and make sure the creator is present, answers questions quickly, and updates his product. I have purchased plenty of things here that have been junk, much worse and much more expensive than a little light switch.

Yet, interestingly enough, I have heard people defend these creators up and down AND even give good reviews when they obviously were not warranted.

A price tag is no guarantee that the item is quality or even works. $2 is fine for an animated item. The animations and scripts themselves are worth the 2$ even if you just buy it and tear it apart. It is the $90 assets that have bad textures, lack of updates, and abandoned by the creators that make buying on the asset store a gamble.

But..this is a change of subject. :) The bottom line is when folks post here we should be honest and give good constructive criticism. A positive experience will encourage the new creator to make better stuff and to actually listen to feedback rather than be drummed out of the asset store. Obviously, this guy had a bad experience with Reddit. I think we can do better.

Hey guys, on the topic of the 4 draw calls, that was the only helpful criticism I got from reddit. I updated this about...oh 4 days ago. I'm just waiting on unity to accept it!

Thanks Teila! You guys have been awesome. I definitely want as much constructive criticism as I can get too! Like I said in the previous post, the draw calls issue should be fixed in the next day or two hopefully, just waiting on unity to pass the dang update haha
