Mandarin is supposed to be the hardest to learn for an English speaker.

Hard to gauge how easy any language is tbh, as most people find their native easy.

I tried picking up one or two languages, but its definitely not as easy as picking up another programming language

For gauging language difficulty there's this list:
    http://www.effectivelanguagelearning.com/language-guide/language-difficulty

Basically for you chinese and japanese will be roughly as difficult as they're for english speaker, because they have nothing in common with neither english nor russian.

The problem with asian language group is that you can't really learn by reading books with a dictionary, because of the kanji (6000+ characters for chinese, 3000+ characters for japanese) and their readings.

I saw that, but that's for people who speak English already.

The language that terrifies me the most is JavaScript. I would prefer to learn Chinese just not to write in JavaScript.

You know, you can google that stuff in your native language, and I guarantee that you'll get the same result. Most difficult ones for your language group will be Japanese, Chinese and Korean.

Except that slang, expressions, sarcasm, innuendo, etc isn't solely limited to English. Just reading through manga and the comments many of the editors make during translation there are a lot of expressions that have little to no meaning to those of us who aren't Japanese and aren't raised in their culture.

English isn't my first language too. I've been learning English for many years and still don't write (and especially don't speak) like a native speaker. Writing comments is a very good way of learning English :), so don't stop write them.

English has a strange curve. Native speakers fail at different grammar than foreigners, but most have trouble with *something* :)

It is hard to imagine that someone struggling to make use of unity (crashing c# in such a safe space) could do better with c++.

If they stick to C++14 they may not do worse. But struggling with either means they haven't learned enough yet.

No, just not more hostile ;)
(Still recommend C# over C++ to learners though!)
