Question I have a new book: Unity from Zero to Proficiency Foundation, however I can't download the assets

I'm on the latest distro of Ubuntu, which is a supported Linux distro for Unity.

However, I've found the assets it tells me to download on page 32 of the book,Unity from Zero to Proficiency Foundation, and I've tried to download them but because my Brother has admin rights on Ubuntu for installing stuff, it won't let me download the assets and open them in Unity, I thought it could be browser related but I've tried it in Chrome, Edge and Firefox with the same results, won't open direct to Unity.

Is there anything I can do while I wait for our Dave to email me back eventually?

 

Hi @RichAllen2021 ! What's the download location? I could download them, check the license, and perhaps get them to you.

 

Go on the asset store and search for standard assets for Unity 2018.4.

Unfortunately Standard Assets is no longer supported. So you're using Unity 2018.4? That would be required to use them. And I don't see a direct download location, you'll need to ask your brother to install it with admin rights if you are receiving "Access Denied" on Ubuntu.

 

No I'm using last year's version, 2020.2 I think.

 

Got it, Unfortunately Standard Assets won't work with that version.

 

Ah so I need to download the 2018 version? Would any of the other tutorials work in that or do they need the newer versions?

 

This would only apply only to projects that use Standard Assets. If the other tutorials don't use Standard Assets, then they likely can use the newer versions of Unity. You can download older versions of Unity here: https://unity3d.com/get-unity/download/archive

 

I've been on Amazon and ordered a more up to date edition of the book this morning.

Also my Brother says he'll help at some point with downloading the 2018.4 assets, but he works full time in that London and has 2 kids.

 

So I got the third edition of the book yesterday and have brought it up to my Parents' to try and do the projects.
