I could not leave Unity behind because of my bitterness over the Pro price and the rental price. I also love UE4 just as much. I find my self jumping into either depending on what type of project I'm in the mood to work on. C# has become so much easier for me and I'm getting the hang of UE4 blueprints and some C++. $75 dollar rental fee or $1500 price is not looking so bad now. I dropped $1200 on Modo 801 with Mesh Fusion added. I also own Zbrush and a few other great tools which were worth the price tag. And Unity free is great to have had while I make up my mind. Politically I might not be able to resist the urge to pile on when the price topic comes up but I'm seriously committed to still making the Pro license happen between now and 2015 whether I go lease option or buy is the only decision I have to make. Unity has done a lot for me since the time I started learning about 2 years ago:) I love the new GUI:)

Has anyone else made the same journey to this conclusion?

So you're picking the tool that is right for the task? Sounds fine to me.

Yes I came to realize that I do that with my other tools. Same thing I do with my 3D Coat and others with Zbrush, Topogun, Blender or Modo. The game engines are no different.

I also realized that I spend more on cigarettes per month than the $75 Unity Lease would cost. I m trying to quit with that as an incentive:) I have invested a lot in Unity assets and my time in regard to learning and getting some levels working. It would be waste to put it all behind me before even releasing some games or apps:)

I realized how much Unity has done for me when I realized that I can think in a Object Oriented way because C# in Unity now intermediate level:) I only new Ansi C when I started:)

These are just applications, putting politics into it or loyalty is dumb, just use what you want. In our case we prefer using Unity at the moment, so that's pretty much all that needs saying. There's no 'shame' or anything like that. People can come and go as they wish :)

This kind of sweetens the pot for people interested in Unity 5 though.

Dumb really!!! I guess you misunderstood the context in which I used the word politics. I meant in terms of lobbying for a lower price, Geez!!!

You're taking offence at a turn of phrase not even directed at you.

I stand corrected. That is what I get for being still up this late.

Putting in my own 2 cents here: The real deal-clencher for a practically unknown amateur like myself is the freebies. The Unity crew's given us these *incredibly* powerful tools to work with, and they aren't charging a dime, even if I make something sale-worthy and make bank. By the time I hit that 100k benchmark, IF I ever hit that, $1500 is chump change, especially as a 'thank you'-style afterthought.

Sure it might be ONLY 20 bucks for UE4, but that's 20 bucks without knowing if it even comes close to fitting my style, a shot in the dark. AND royalties on top of that.

All a matter of taste, I suppose though. Just my tastes eventually led me here.

While $20 for "a shot in the dark" is negligible for the kind of software we're talking about, I have to say it's super refreshing to see someone saying those things. Most people ignore the value presented in Unity's free license, and then ignore the royalties on the other side of the engine fence...

    Thank you! Your welcome:)

Unity has been like a free online Game Development university:) That is often over looked as well. One term of Game Development at the local art schools here in Detroit can cost $2500 to $4000.

That render is awesome. i so look forward to Unity 5:)

may I ask if that render was done just with Unity 5 Pro or is there a Mamosoft or other third party shader involved?

    That does sweeten the pot:)

Well sometimes loyalty is smart. For instance I won't eat meat anymore but several times a year I need milk and eggs but can't buy it from US industrial farmers so I go to the same farmer couple where I've seen how they treat their livestock.

Sometimes letting politics in it is smart and businesses that support abusive policies by American industrial farmers need to know you don't support the abusive politician or the abusive business practices. There are hoards of folk playing sides and dissing each other, supporting policies and laws that hurt themselves because if you support a policy that gives you an unfair advantage over another, it is ultimately unfair to yourself as well. Ultimately, you expect an advantage when doing a job you were trained for a great expense versus someone

Now Unity Free is rather nonpolitical and helpful to all, you don't even have to be a student, an educational institute, or a non-profit institute: the definition for all of those things that is itself nebulous and tweaked at times abusively and used for unfair advantage often today. So Unity politically earns loyalty by their pricing policy for Unity Free.

Not that I know anything about political donations, lobbying, or such by Unity as a corporation and truthfully I use Unity Free because it was the first and still is the best for mobile devices.

Maybe you'd be better served hiring human beings to decorate and allow the robots/computers to design your next gam as that's much closer to reality now.

I didn't mean political in that sense. I just meant starting or participating in post that are intended to pressure Unity to lower the prices. Political was bad choice of words:) This post was intended to compliment and show appreciation for Unity as it is and UE4 for that matter as well:)

The $100,000 is for gross revenue. It could easily be a good chunk of your net income if your costs are high enough.

Also while Unity Pro itself is $1,500, mobile development with Pro will be at least double and typically triple as you often want both Android and iOS.
