I use mine for legitimate transactions so it's still open.

What's being done that you mention is no different that what has been done well before the internet was around every time you write a check, use a debit card, or credit card the information is saved and they sell that information to various other companies and data warehouses (e.g. Epsilon). You're delusional if you think PayPal and Facebook is unique in not doing such transactions when most big businesses that aren't even online on the internet participate in these data clearinghouses.

I also saw though when I was looking to buy a ticket to an NFL game that you could see and sign up to see others on Facebook that had bought tickets and where their seats are.

What's different now is in the past you could keep and do all your transactions in cash now that the (US) government requires electronic deposits of checks it issues about the only people conducting cash only transactions are drug dealers and various other criminal enterprises. Even legitimate small businesses accept checks and must cash them in which case they will be visiting potentially many banks to get those checks cashed to say nothing of accepting credit card payments.

It's clear governments are working to put the squeeze on terrorism and criminal enterprises, while businesses are trying to squeeze every penny out of each customer, each government, and each others' businesses as they can. Eventually that will lead to some of the trails leading to various world governments as we are finding out and often times businesses. All in all, this is good for honest people.

Don't use Paypal!! I had the displeasure of dealing with their sh*t when I bought my Pro License, they kept hold of the money for ages [weeks] before they released it to Unity and didn't even tell me!

The only problem I have with paypal is that it takes them along time to transfer to the bank account. If you are ever doing any conversion it screws you over. Paypal is not good but I dont know of any better system.

Im in the same boat as you. I've had PayPal screw me out of a hundred or so bucks, but have nobody else to go to. Sure there are other companies with the same system, even better....but non of them have the huge support that PayPal does.

In New Zealand the gambling (horse/dog/sports betting) industry still has cash transactions at the desk. Such an obvious way to launder money is to say you won it on races.

Agree, Paypal is a necessary evil. I would not let any more than a few hundred accumulate in it.

Ive been using paypal for buying and selling for more than a decade and never had a big issue with it,

just the usual chargebacks from unauthorized purchases, but most of the items i sell are under $100 so not much hurts,

every 3 or six months i get a chargeback for $30, or $50 or sometimes for $100 from unauthorized purchase, but must of my sell able goods are digital items, so not much to loose here.

yeah it sucks when a chargeback but it is understandable there are too many phishing sites outhere that lots of paypal users dont realize and give away their login credentials, also using malware software they most of the time get a nasty trojan virus that steals their personal info.

so far ive been lucky with online transactions but for a reason, i never mix my pc's meaning i have a bare minimal windows updated install with up to date antivirus and internet protection just for my online banking, paypal transactions etc.. which i only turn it on when i do an online transaction, other than that is shutdown or unplugged from internet.

1 dedicated pc for my game development, and 1 pc for my other just for fun stuff and never mix any of them for security reason.

also never leave the paypal with more than a couple of hundreds in it at any given time. very often go to the atm and withdraw money from it and deposit into the bank for safe keeping.

never trust paypal for big online transactions and never leave big amount of money sitting on it.
but other than that paypal is a must needed evil as AaronC said

Any reason not to leave "big amount of money" (how much is that) sitting there. I was just keeping it there for a rainy day incase I needed it rather then putting it my bank though its probably not that much as its usually under a $1000 anyway.

Any amount that you feel uncomfortable losing access to indefinitely you should not keep in PayPal.

I've never had a problem with paypal. I've never had any slow transfers, withholding of money, etc etc.
