I can't start Unity

    Hey there. Fairly experienced Unity / C# dev. Running Unity Hub 2.4.2, trying to start a Unity project with 2020.1.11f1. Running Windows 10, 224 GB on the target (non c : \ ) drive, 16384MB Ram.

    Project stuck like this for an hour:

    Eventually used Task Manager to End Task on Editor, only for the editor to remain 'running' (though only the title image remains visible over the Desktop - the progress bar goes away.

    Unity Editor can't be 'End Tasked', doesn't seem to time out, just perpetually stays as 'Not Responding' until computer is restarted - related, I can't delete the project folder until my computer is restarted, as the zombie editor seems to still be accessing the folder.

    Checking logs ala Unity Editor Logs...

    On attempting to 'end task' Unity, I ended up with the same old un-'end task'able Unity Editor.

    Will now attempt with different version of Unity.

    So, have now tried with two other different versions of Unity, 2020.1.6f1 & 2019.4.13f1.

    Same result as above with other 2020 versions.

    The Unity 2019 LTS version just freezes on the title image, but doesn't display the loading bar (which I believe is enforced in 2020).

    However, the Task Manager / End Task behaviour is just the same.

    Can anybody suggest any further solutions? I have a nice paying Unity development job coming up, and I really need to get my tools up and running...!

    So, configured Comodo to ignore my Unity projects folder, my Unity folder and my Unity Hubs folder. Never had to do that in the past, but got some advice that it's worth a shot. However:

    @Antypodish , anybody around - does anybody have any suggestions? Could really do with resolving this.

    I would try to reinstall .NET not sure if that would help, but something is blocking your projects.
    Where do you save project files? I assume is not the same directory as Unity installation.
    Can you disable antivirus, to check if is involved?
    Can you actually create new empty project, in any Unity version?

    Attempted to create a new project with 2020.1.12f1, resulted in:

    Frozen on importing assets.
    I used the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool and got the following result:

    I save my project files on a harddrive labled I: (Devs&Docs) with 221GB free space. I've been doing that since I've been working with Unity, about ten years, with no issues. Unity itself + hub are on my C: solid state drive.
    Disabled Antivirus, attempted to start a new Unity project with the following result:

    Frozen on importing assets.
    I have now attempted to do this with five different Unity versions. Is there a version you'd suggest I try using?

    Any clues on this folks? I'm itching to get stuff done with Unity.

    No probs. Only that, none of these manged to help. Your case is very odd.
    I am starting running out of ideas.
    What about installing Unity on different drive?
    Any Unity version technically should work. It more to check. If issue is Unity version related. But there is more to it as it seems.
    It looks like, there something else is going on on your PC.

    Was able to do some work on a different PC, but I'd prefer to work on my own dev computer. Tried putting the new project on the root level of another drive, same response:

    I'll get started putting Unity on another drive, as you suggested @Antypodish . I had a friend suggest that I roll back some Windows updates, but I'm loath to court instability in that way.

    I'm pretty desperate here. I'm wondering if I might get more suggestions and/or help if I re-post this thread with a more attention-getting subject line. Really need to find a solution.

    Few days ago I sent already a report, asking who may know about the issue.
    Unfortunatelly I am out of further ideas.
    There may be indeed some OS updates conflicting.
    Or even hardware.
    I assume you have full admin permission, since you can install software.

    I doubt you will experience any instability, just because of not having some OS updates. Most software are very resilient to OS milodifications. In fact later updates are tend to bring more issues and conflicts with installed software, than not updating.

    Oh btw., did you try having project on different physical drive (not just different partition), or even memory stick? Try that if you haven't yet.

    So, uninstalled all Unity, Unity Hub, uninstalled Visual Studio. Installed Unity Hub & Unity to a memory stick -

    Exact same outcome.

    In one of my previous attempts above I've tried it with a different HD (not just partition). Same outcome.

    I haven't changed my hardware recently (Unity was working since the last changes). I have full admin permission.

    Going to clean out my Unity installs again and try installing to a different drive. Somebody mentioned trying to use compmgmt.msc to find useful info in the logs, but it's a bit beyond me. I might try rolling back an OS update after that, but other than that I'm really fresh out of ideas.

    Thanks for trying to contact folks, @Antypodish . I'm baffled by this. =/

    @Antypodish - it's a good thought, but unfortunately, no. There was a good break of time between when I was working with Unity on this machine and when I found it in this state. C'est la vie. =/
