I can not use the record function in the Timeline editor

I watched some tutorials and want to animate some objects in my scene.
But i am unable to click the record button.
Any ideas why?

Select the object that has the director of you timeline on it, Lock the Timline inspector on the top right with the little lock.
Then you can select any other Object and animate them without loosing the focus to the timeline.
