So i found this open source Unity game https://unitylist.com/p/5vk/Unity-Turn-Based-JRPG but I'm not sure how to open it in Unity since it doesn't seem to be a Unity project. Do I just drag into the assets panel?

Also, while I'm at it, does anyone have any recommendations for Unity open source games/code with turn based rpg combat that I can learn from/use as a template?

It does look to be a Unity project, although it doesn't have an /Assets folder, etc. It might be really old. You would unzip it, and use Open Project in Unity and point to the root (top) directory

I took a look at the content of the archive; it's a total mess...

@DeepFryBanana I'd create a empty new project and drop everything that is in the archive into the assets folder; launch Unity and see what happens... :)

Edit: you'll probably have to also install the plugins the authors used to make his project.
