   In the editor you have https://docs.unity3d.com/2020.2/Documentation/ScriptReference/HandleUtility.FindNearestVertex.html
   
   Otherwise an easy solution is https://docs.unity3d.com/2020.2/Documentation/ScriptReference/Physics.Raycast.html, but that requires a concave mesh collider.
