How to add multiplayer capability to the platformer from the tutorial?

I have created a basic platformer game using this tutorial.

Now I want to add multiplayer capabilities, i. e. modify the game so that there are two players in one world (i. e. two players run in the same set of platforms).

    1) What is the best place to start for implementing this (I have no Unity experience apart from doing a couple of tutorials such as the Roll-A-Ball and the platformer)?

    2) Imagine I have only one machine. How can I test multiplayer version of the platformer, i. e. how can I have two players running in the same world when I only have one physical machine?

    Thanks in advance
