Hey, I know like nearly nothing about making games and I plan to buy the book named- Sam Teaches Unity and I wanted to know how long it will take of learning to be able to make a good FPS kind of game that I might be able to release?

It's taken me 47 years to know how to make a good game.

If you are a competent coder, experienced in c# or Javascript, have artists who can create good content for your game, and are working with game designers who know how to design a game people want to play, then you're looking at 3-6 months.

Personally I would say 3-6 months is very unrealistic in most cases. Let me tell you now, I am very experienced programmer as well as music/sound producer and designer of 10 years. I've gone to college for IT, know pretty much every programming language out there, and I work professionally mainly in web development for years. Game development is a time consuming MONSTROSITY. I've been poking away at the same game for nearly five years now.

Maybe that is not the case for everyone (I'm sure it is not). But for me, I am making a very professional level quality game, or at least trying to, and I am doing 98% of it all by myself with no help. It takes forever to program games.

Your FPS you want to make - FPS games are very complicated and cumbersome, especially if you have never tried making a game before. Let me give you some sound advice BEFORE you start:
    1) Make several prototypes - you won't believe the amount of things you will learn to do more efficiently by just playing around with the Unity framework. Dont expect your first copy to be the official/final product. I've done this and my game has come out to be an unorganized mess in several areas.
    2) Utilize the asset store, other developers, and help - I would recommend getting as much help as you can for your game. Game development is very time consuming, do everything you can to finish your project.
    3) Make a realistic deadline - so one of the forum post on here, someone talked about their wive saying "finish that project in 4 weeks or you have to quit game development". What can you make in say, 3-6 weeks? Trying setting aside six weeks and make a game in that amount of time.

As long as you like. :D

And even if you made a very good FPS, you might be willing/tempted, to improve.
Or spend a few more months or years, wanting to add in more stuff.
And make it better and better.
Until you run out of ideas! :D
