how does prefab workflow for 3d models works?

    i realized there are great advantages in using reusable assets in video games. like if you can model a door and use it in different locations of the game. my problem with this workflow is the artist can not visualize the final output of the artwork when the door is separate from the building model. should i model and texture the whole thing and at the final step export parts of the building separately? how can a team manages to create reusable assets and also can maintain a good visual quality as well?
    is there any good reference or practice for this?
