I haven't used Linux really before and I'm trying to develop my game for the platform, I have a laptop running a fresh install of Ubuntu ( latest version, 20.20.16f1 something ) and I've run Unity Hub, downloaded all I need... but after a restart I thought I'd get a clickable icon or something ?

I have an icon like a cog-wheel with the word Unity written under it in a directory, I assume that's what I need to start me off.

so could you please give me a quick crash course on running this editor thanks

You don't need Linux to build to the Linux platform (but it certainly helps to test the game!). You can build to the Linux platform from Mac or Windows. You run Unity from the Hub on Linux, same as other platforms. The Hub should show in the desktop Applications

Trust me, if your Linux system's anything like mine (A Chrome OS Desktop) you won't be able to run Unity with ANY degree of success.

I've been trying for the the last 2 and half months.

Might be my version of Linux (20.04 LTS) but I could install the hub... I downloaded an image then I had run 'Terminal' then I had to type the full path and the filename of that image... which is a ruddy rigmarole... I installed the hub, then a version of Unity then some modules... and after about an hour trying the run it I gave up... I can see the 'Installs' so called and there was a really nice icon with the work Unity underneath... brilliant, couldn't do anything with it of course... really convenient, helps the creative process I can tell you... so I looked around and around and around and there wasn't a single thing to help me run Unity... I mean I started using computers in the early 80's right..so have I really gone to pot ? had my brain turned to widdle or something ? anyway last chance I thought OK... install Ubunto 18 LTS and try again...

You are using an unsupported platform so the behavior is expected and is not typical for supported Linux systems. And my first message to you on this issue was over a year ago.

Thank you, I persevered and got there in the end, I was using an older project made in Unity 5.x and although I could install a fresh Unity on Linux via the hub I couldn't actually select my old project, just did nothing when I selected the project directory, so the hub wasn't allowing me to run an editor, even though I'd set the directory for the editor in the hub settings... so I was confused and hasty, I just needed to think and try again.

Can you create a new project from the hub? What was the path of the 5.x project (the path that contains /Assets, /ProjectSettings, etc) And you chose Add project from the Hub for the 5.x project, correct? (not New)

Yes I could create a new project from the hub seemingly, I didn't follow through with doing a new project.

The path to my old project was: /home/San_Holo/Desktop/Galaxy Pilot Stuff/GALAP
I used the 'Add' from the menu, I tried other directories just to see and I had an error about being an invalid project directory, but adding the correct dir via add did nothing.

Your approach looks correct, sorry for the issue.
