How can I make this Alembic animation more efficient?

A client has requested a VR scene with objects / creatures pressing up and moving against a membrane. I've got something promising in Blender using a high-res mesh (64,800 tris (Unity's max per object is 65,000)) with a displacement modifier driven by a animated depth map.

I've exported this object to Unity using the Alembic importer and it's basically working. However, the file is quite large (350mb) and it seems to be eating my FPS (from over a thousand while not running to sometimes less than 60fps when playing the 5-second animation).

Can anybody suggest a better (cheaper) way to achieve this effect?

Much appreciated. This is a new area for me...!
