How can I group gameobjects and still respect their transforms?

Say I have a set of four objects that are each an instance of a prefab.

I want to group them in the hierarchy for convenience's sake.

So I create an empty gameobject at root level and reset the transform.
I then drag all four objects to this gameobject.

The problem is that the transform exists at 0,0,0 and my objects are at 10,0,10. So when I select the newly created gameobject 'folder' to move them about the transform handles are found elsewhere in the scene.

Furthermore, trying to then assemble these four gameobjects as a single prefab means that every single subsequent placement of the grouped prefab in the scene will be at the 'incorrect' position of the parent transform.
