how aoi (area of intreset) work in mmo game ?

    Hi
    I wanted to know exactly how aoi is implemented in mmo games? How exactly does a player find out that another player has entered his area and should get that user's data? Should a database be used for this? In general, I wanted to know more about how to get off, thanks
