Hello, i am a young person that wants to make a game and fulfill one of many dreams. Thing is, i really don't know where to start, which is beginning to almost get depressing. Should i start out by making a 3D game or a 2D game? If 3D, which program should i use to make the graphics? Which tutorials should i watch or should i watch any at all? Should i buy an Unity book or search the internet?

I am really lost as you can see, but willing to learn as i've always wanted to make a game. All i need is someone to help me start.
Thanks in advance, and i hope there aren't too many people asking the exact same thing.

No, you shouldn't "watch" tutorials, you should do the tutorials. That means following along on your own computer. And then try to take each one a few steps farther.

Just start with the Learn link at the top of the page. Unity has more and better learning materials than any development environment I've ever seen — it's all there for the taking. Dig in!

Thanks for the tip! I am still oblivious as to what i want to create though... what do you think would be the best thing to start with? I've thought about a 2D platformer, but i can't seem to find any tutorials or anything like that up to date or of good quality.

No, no, you've got it backwards. You go to the "Learn" section, pick a beginner-level tutorial, and do it. You will create whatever the tutorial shows you how to create.

Then you pick another, and do that. Again, what you will create is already decided by the tutorial author.

Then you do that a few dozen more times. You'll have created lots of different things, and no longer be a level 0 villager; you'll be a level 2 or 3 Code Wrangler.

Then you pick an idea of your own. You will have lots of them by this point.

You'll work on that, probably realize that it's a level 6 Project Monster, much too tough for a Level 2 Code Wrangler, and flee with hopefully only some minor damage to your ego. Then you'll either do some more training, or pick another of your own ideas (more wisely this time). Something like Flappy Bird or Doodle Jump, for example, is a Level 2 monster or so. You should be able to slay that on your own by that time, and will level up your skills in the process.

    Rise and repeat.

You should certainly not be worried at this point about what you're going to build. What you should focus instead is on building skill. And by the time you have enough skill for it to matter, you'll have plenty of ideas to choose from (trust me!).

It's good advice you've gotten so far :) I know it can feel crappy doing tutorials instead of working on the game of your dreams, but believe me, you need to pay your dues first.

You've already seen how overwhelming game development is, and no one gets to the dream in their head without doing dumb little projects to learn the ropes.

Once you're more comfortable making games it'll all start to fall into place.

Start by doing Ludum Dare this weekend. Start small and learn. Don't try to make something huge off the bat.

    Good Luck.
