How am I supposed to handle animations for hundreds of units?

    Using an Animator on hundreds of units visible on screen at the same time is not really an option due to how poor the performance is. What is the recommended way to handle hundreds of animators, like in a large RTS? Is there some asset or built in feature to help with this?

    I'm sure there must be some technique but I have no idea what to search for.
