I did some self teaching the last week to brush up my Unity knowledge and took the chance to get into C# for once. Even though i just used free store assets so far, i'm pretty happy with the result. What do you people think?

Hmm. I'll be a bit more negative sounding. It's a good start with a lot of room for improvement. There is absolutely zero innovation here. Same old bog-standard shmup formula.... spaceships follow a predetermined fixed path, shoot some bullets in a straight line, player dodges and shoots. But keep going!

    And now for balance...

It has a very cool look to it as far as the presentation goes. I don't know why exactly but I like the look.

The game play does look very standard. I don't see R-Type here at all and instead just a generic side scrolling shooter.

Overall, I think it is a great start. Just needs a lot of "more", a generous serving of variety and just a dash of something somewhat unique.

Thanks for the feedback. It's true about it being hardly creative so far. I'm actually a graphic artist and doing this for getting into the technical side of Unity. Hence first time i programmed in C#, so that was already quite an archivement for me. As such the innovation part is taking the backseat so far and the graphics are freebies from the asset store, as i know i can get easily lost when doing art. Stupid perfectionism... I'll make it pretty once i'm happy with the gameplay.

Also, it's only one week so far as a Noob from ground up. The formations atm are rather generic, as it's the first implementation of a path-following system. Just put them in to test the system.

My short-term goal is to get at least a sorta general R-Type/Thunderforce/Gradius feeling to it, which means better level design and more types of enemies.

My big plan is to have it run on my arcade machine earlier or later:

Today's update is a grayblock/first design of the player ship. I will dedicate a day once in a while to art, so it also looks the part a little more.

May want to add a very subtle up/down motion to the body - reaction to the walking motion. Looks good!
