Hi all over there, I'm just new to unity and I'm glad to join this community. As I'm new to this place I want to ask some questions, please point me to the right direction if my questions cannot be answered here, I'll appreciate your help and answers.

I'm looking in doing some kind of game and/or simulation project of naval, air and land warfare scenarios, this is some kind of personal satisfaction, or maybe a dream to becomes true, I loved to play games like fleet command, homeworld, Artic Circle, but I wanted to make a simulation more realistic and more good looking in models, terrain and simulation. I loved the realistic simulation of Fleet Command about units, tactics but the graphics are very old and not upgradable not to mention that the engine is to old, the opossite to Artic Circle where graphics are good modeled but the simulation and tactics sucks, the good balanced graphics and simulation of homeworld and the posibility to build things to increase the power of your armed forces. I'd like to do a game where all those good things are merged and take place in our planet earth.

    Basic principles:

    1. There should be a terrain (2d or 3d) view where I can put models on it (naval, air, sea units) and drive it to go somewhere over the map and give them directives to attack other units.
    2. There should be a good level of zooming where you can see entire naval task force to individual units to see what are they attacking at (camera view or similar) like google earth
    3. Real terrain data (dem,or something like that) could be online or precached,at the beginning It can load a map area from archive, but probably it can be upgraded to a some kind of online map rendering

..and too many other things I have in mind but needs the right tools to make it.

So the question is If I can do something like that with Unity 3d and what kind of learning path and knowledge I need to know to make this application.

    Do I need C++ programers?

Anyway, I'm looking for 3d engines to do this things and I wonder what direction should I follow.

I'll downloading Unity 3d and test it just to see what is like.

    Very thanks for your time.

    Hello, and welcome.

You'll find that the learning section will be most beneficial to get you started in the right direction and get you off the ground: http://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/modules
I'd suggest starting with the beginner project tutorials then start going through the other tutorials as you need them.

Also, with Unity I would suggest learning C# if you don't already know it. There are other languages, but almost every tutorial will be in C#. Plus, it's a relatively easy language to pick up.

Yes, you can do all of that with Unity. No, you probably don't need C++ programmers since scripting in Unity is done with C# and UnityScript (JavaScript.) Most people will recommend that you start small, and get some practice/experience before attempting such a large project. Check out Tutorials and the Asset Store.

Hey thanks all for the replies, I'll start with the tutorials and the docs and I'll go with small steps and try to get the big picture of it, I understand that big things will take some time to get ready. I'll download and install unity on my Windows machine first and then start doing basic things.

Is there any Linux download for Unity? I read that it is a multiplatform engine, but download is available for windows and mac only. Can I start using linux directly instead of windows?

    Best regards.

The other guys pointed you in the right direction.

But can i ask if you fulfill any role already? Can you model? Animate? Code? Create 2D textures?
If not then you might need help with some areas and focus on one yourself. Mastering one of them can take a lifetime.

It can produce Linux binaries, but there isn't an editor for Linux.

Hi, yes I'm already a 3d modeler, used 3d studio Max and Maya for some projects I've participated, but only model, animation and textures, no coding.
