I recently discovered GMStudio is never getting a 3d mode for a room editor so i switched to unity, and found it can also do 2d but my problem here in lies that i need a 2d main menu and a actual 3d engine for my actual 3d game, and no i am not going to ask for this to get easier as it is everything i wanted GMStudio and never got... Ok so i maybe new to the programming world but i am eger to learn...

Dont bite off more than you can chew there ok, they go hard on people who switch from their product to another one and dont particularly take kindly to it, not to mention the admins and moderators can snap at the simplest mistake you make there and once you get 8 warning points which i have not done yet, but it is rumored that is how they erase and ip block your account.

YoYogames is only good for one game. Shotgun Fun Fun. Other than that, there aren't any good games ahha. Game Maker is nice I guess but I still prefer Unity

'Glasgow' for the sequel? No, no... that's the wrong number, assuming a context in which all geographical regions are numbered...

@falconsoft Start with the "Learn" section of Unity to learn Unity (both 3D and 2D). However, keep in mind that the GUI components are getting overhauled with version 4.6 which is coming soon. Therefore, don't spend too much time learning the current/old GUI stuff.

You can keep an eye on this site for when the GUI components are finally released: http://isthenewguioutyet.com/

Sometimes I read stuff about games and these names are dropped because people like to play them or they are interesting.

    http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/spelunky

    http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/gunpoint

    http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/valdis-story-abyssal-city

    http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/risk-of-rain

    http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/nidhogg

But alas, GameMaker isn't for me. The eccentries of the GM language don't gel with me and the way code is spread all over is way too unorganized for me.

I must agree it even got too messy for me after a while, that is why i switched to unity.
Would unity be a good place to start with html5 or any browser based gaming language that supports both 2d and 3d?
Well I just looked at the price and I cannot afford it, never in a life time but i can get something just as good cheaper called torque, so either cut 45% of the heavy price off or you will see your numbers of customers dwindling like water running down a stream, no offense it is just that you have a great product but no one in their right mind would cough up such a hierarchy of money your practically the cryptolocker of game design.

Torque is just as good as Unity? Seems legit... And I'm not sure how GM, Torque or anything are cheaper then free?

Unity Free is free. Unity Pro is not.

I can see how this is confusing.

On the Buy page there is no mention of a Unity Free version except for a link to the license comparison.

If you skim through the Download page you might only see "30-day trial of Unity Pro" above the download button.

Then again, if you read that inaccurately, I don't know if Unity is a suitable choice.

but if you want a full version to keep forever $1500 that is a lot of money, and game maker studio has it priced at $800 i cannot afford any of those so Torque being $179 is my only other option, i am not rich yet but if and when i can afford unity i may think twice as to whether or not to buy it, i am not saying its bad i am just saying the price is heavy and could be at a minimum of $950 which is $150 more expensive than game maker studio but i would certainly buy it for that price you see $1500 is a heck of a lot of money...

Unity Free is most likely better then Torque, and if you are a student you could get an education license to learn how to use Unity, the only catch is you cant use it for commercial.

TylerPerry beat me to it, Unity's educational pricing is decent. Something to think about in terms of costs...
    • 3D Studio Max is $3700,
    • Maya 2015 is $2400 (-257 for promotion)
    • Modo 801 is $1500
    • Houdini Indie is $200
    • Blender is free but crap
    • UE4 = $19/mo but cancel after the first month.
However, Autodesk's educational suite is typically on sale for a few hundred bucks. But once you go commercial, expect to shell out money.

do in app purchases such as money brought in a mmorpg with real cash count, as commercial so long as the actual game itself is free?

Of course they count, unless their has been a EULA I think it's just based off your income, nothing to do with the game. As in even if you are a doctor earning over 100k you still are supposed to buy a pro license.

I'm very unsure of you general experience but please don't tell me your first game is gonna be a MMO!

Also if money is what you are concern about, you may earn up to 100k with a unity3D free version, and if you earnthis much consider how many unity pro licenses you can buy for that!

As other have said start with places such as these:

    http://unity3d.com/learn/documentation
    http://unity3d.com/learn

If you are like me a hate reading look up stuff on youtube eg:

    https://www.youtube.com/user/BurgZergArcade

or my own newly started channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9RAMZEhorqMsrl0QW8dhsQ (sorry for shameful self advertising xD)

or simply search for Unity3D tutorials on your favorite search engine.

Ah yes but you see its more of a 2d side scrolling post modern days post futuristic style of mmorpg... with gadgets instead of spells...
Besides i doubt it will make millions but if it does i will certainly use those millions to buy this software. So say i was to get a trial of the pro software for 30 days, will i be able to sell my creations, so i could earn some money to buy the full version?
Oh also i need to know how the variables work, and I am working on a 2d puzzle platformer but i need to know to use the particle effects, in one spot for example a 2d cloud that disappears only when clicked on, so a object above it can drop down and fall through the fading realistic looking cloud.

Also It is going to have a level map just like in cut the rope except it is called "Feed The Alien Pizza" and you must guide those two objects to each other. Yes it is my first game i prototyped it with game maker studio but now i need to redo it from scratch in unity, for example you click on a candy ramp with the mouse you drop it and then you click on the cloud the pizza using physics bounces and rolls and slides along the candy ramps and the level is complete if the pizza is eaten by the alien and the timer of 4 minutes and 30 seconds has not hit 0. Also it will have 500 levels in the full version.

It doesn't even appear as if you really need to be a student as they don't seem to check credentials. Or at least not current ones as my last time attending college was over a decade ago.

I decided to try learning Maya LT recently. I went to their site and applied for a student copy. They gave me a three year license.

IIRC you're not allowed to release things you've made with the Trial license.

With Unity FREE you CAN build a game, sell the game, put IAP's in the game, use monetizing Ads in the game. What you CANNOT do is have your own splash screen, use post-process shaders, use the texture atlas stuff, and a few other features.

Depends on what you want and who is doing the verifying. My wife was checking out some things and in school, picked up the whole suite for about $300. Usually all they require is a working email address at a verified institution. They also requested proof of her entrance date.
