I tryed to update to 2019.3 it locks up on me all the time.
I went next to 2018.3, it seem to work ok, but I can't write any scripts. When the editor should come up, note pad does. Hope someone know hot to fix this problem. I knew I should not have try to update. I am problem out of the game stuff.

    Hi @sadsack,
Check your Edit/Preferences/External Tools and see what it says there about external editor. It should be Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio.

It might be that VS Code is somehow configured wrong, that's happened to me many times with Unity 2018 and later versions. For a while I couldn't get it working without hacks like selecting "custom" script editor and so on.

You have it backwards. The problems you are encountering now and will encounter in the future thanks to this update are the result of stubbornly sticking to a very old release for a very long time only to update to the latest release as soon as it was made available.

If you want to update a very old project to a new release of Unity you should be doing it in small jumps. Upgrade from 5.3 to 5.6, then to 2017, then to 2018, then to 2019 fixing any minor problems that will occur with each jump.

Unity completely abandoned MonoDevelop almost two years ago.

There are three major IDEs available. Visual Studio Community, Visual Studio Code, and JetBrains Rider.

    https://www.jetbrains.com/dotnet/promo/unity/

Lightweight alternatives to IDEs include Script Inspector 3.

@sadsack you need to configure it as the script editor if it's not. And when you said visual studio, you meant VS Code, Visual Studio 2019?

EDIT: Here are two screenshots, check this setting:

    In Unity 2018.x versions:

    In Unity 2019.3:

Thank you all, it is up and working, I think, visual studio said that it was out of date. I think all I have to do is just log in and that should fix it. Thanks all of you. every little bit helps.
