HEVC vs H264 for video playback (iPhone7)

    Targeting an iPhone 7 for an AR application that will playback video in the Ar experience.

    Should I be using HEVC encoded video instead of H264?


    I'm primarily concerned with low CPU usage for decoding. Just wondering since the newer iPhones are supposed to have built in hardware support for HEVC(H265) decoding and playback.

    Just FYI, iPhones that support HEVC codec include:
    • iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus or later.
    • iPad (6th generation) or later.
    • iPad Air (3rd generation) or later.
    • iPad mini (5th generation)
    • iPad Pro (10.5 inch), iPad Pro (11 inch), and iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation) or later.
