Help with avatar skin

I am new here and am not sure where to seek the information I want but thought I might start here.

I have an avatar and have imported it into Unity, successfully.
I now want to give it a skin, a UV map that will flesh it out as it were.
How do I do that in Unity? Can I?

Any information on how or where to find this information or tutorials to that end would be appreciated.

It's a lot more complicated than you probably expect. You won't learn how to do what you are asking in a day, or even a week. Or a month, probably. If you are interested in learning how to make or edit 3d models, check out pluralsight.com for tons of good and inexpensive step by step beginner tutorials.
