    For a Zelda Clone.

    Swords cut grass.

    Axes chop trees.

    Maces break rock.

    Spears (blank blank).

    Pop balloons?

Reach out of the way targets?

    Catch fish?

Lol, well yeah, of course it would work as a weapon.

    I’m saying, what’s a good auxiliary function for a spear in a Zelda-like?

So far, the best I can think of is maybe have a fungus type plant with and air sack that can only be popped with a spear.

Well that's a good idea. And maybe it can stop airy balloon enemies too. Or maybe arrows might be better, to deal with airy balloon type enemies.

Oh I thought you were making a word puzzle.

Spears catch fish (you already said that one, but I agree)

Is this 2D or 3D? I was thinking using it as a pole to do a vault to higher platforms. It could be restricted to only work on special tiles or something. Like the sprint in a link to the past but with a spear to a special tile. Would probably not work as good in 3d though :p

Spears provide hand-holds. (Ie: stick them into a wall, and use them to climb stuff.)

    Spears stick objects together.

Spears allow you to jump further (ie: pole vault).

    Spears push (dangerous) things.

Spears cross distances. This encapsulates most of the examples provided above.

Maybe you can have a spear variation, with a rope or string attached to it. Where you can hurl it at an object that is far away, and pull it at you. Or use it to climb high places, by throwing the spear at a wooden type wall, and when it sticks in the wall, you use the rope attached to it to climb up to the top.
