Having trouble with transitions with 3D animations

So I just graduated from using 2D sprites to animations made in blender. However I'm having some trouble with the transitions between my Idle and Walk animations.
So what is happening is I have a parameter in the animator that is called move. When the up key is pressed move changes to equaling 1. When that happens the animator transitions from idle to walking animations. However for some reason the animation will only transition from Idle to Walking when the first animation is over and move still equals one. So if I'm not still pressing the up key when the animation ends it won't transition.
I tried messing with the transition setting but I only managed to make both animations play at the same to, or just jump from one to the other with out any blending so it looks terrible.
Can someone help me with this?
(Edit) I'm a little lost here, what I'm trying to do is transition from one animation to another smoothly, not just jump to it. Like blend the to in the transition
