The idea would be to create a specific game using Unity and have the Unity community contribute to it's development.

UT already has some competitions and challenges but this would take it a step further.

So how about it Unity a community game project, it would ideally be driven by a small team of UT developers/artists. They would manage the community's contributions to all aspects of the game?

And to get an idea what game would you like Unity to start as a community project, please vote on the game genres you would like to see created?

That's a good idea! But wouldn't it be simpler to create a public thread for voting with a Github repository to store project files?

It would probably be best for it to have some sort of stylized look

Meh. I might pop in from time to time. But developing by comitee hardly seems like my cup of tea.

That said I am handing over complete creative control to a game designer for the weekend in the GGJ. (We should totally have a thread for that). So maybe I'll be more open to others directing my work after the weekend.

Generally this is not a good idea and it leads to nowhere after a period. Until Unity would pay the most talented modelers and the best coders to work together to produce a game with stunning graphics i don't see the need for it.

You don't have a personnal game project and you need to team with other people, why don't you simply propose some collaboration to make a game with a small team ? This is lot better.

OK at the moment strategy is the top game genre in the poll.

So what if Unity used their rather great looking Blacksmith demo content to build a Viking / Fantasy Strategy game?

Or their Sci Fi Guy and make a FTL style strategy space game?

Or would an angry bots RTS be more fun to work on?

The idea is to leverage what Unity already has so the community's creative members can have fun taking part in making a larger game.

It's not a terrible suggestion. In part the new Unreal Tournament is community-added-to, as is their engine. Thing is for such a thing to be good, it would need some staff to monitor and work with it on bitbucket, so it's not a snap decision for them.

The ideal case would be the brighton team / learn team run it, in part as a major learning resource. Perhaps this would be a good thing to tie into the new collaborative research Unity is doing on roadmap.

@Arowx: How about a number of different one-level concept games with the central access point to them being the sound stage in that Unity Labs demo. You could enter the desired mini-game you wished to play and it could visualize the process of the sound stage becoming a holodeck with the environment filling in.

It could double as a way to show potential developers that Unity can handle a wide array of genres.

Or place an arcade machine or two in the setting where players can try 2D or even 3D games, extended from existing Unity tutorials.

What if the character puts on a HMD and is then transported to a game world, go VR within VR!

In all honesty our content and demo developers don't have time set something up like this, but that doesn't mean that anyone here can't use any of our free Assets to set this up themselves. If you want a community developed game you don't need our official hand to make it so.

it would be good to have an "open source" section for community project like UMA, the new image effects etc, modular components that everyone can participate instead of games

Opensource-style development won't work well, IMO. You'd either need someone with "vision" to direct the project towards specific goal OR you'd need a prize.

Setting up github project with voting most likely will just result in nothing and project slowly dying.

@Thomas Pasieka Ideally we would need the help of the artists on the forum as well as game / level and sound designers.

Also as already mentioned a clear set of goals and direction for the project or projects.

With a strong core there would be lots of opportunity for the community to mod and adapt the game.

But if it makes it to a half decent status then people will start taking it and re-branding it on steam and other platforms.

So at least it will need some level of creative commons license, either to ensure it authors are acknowledged or something a bit stronger where improvements to the code have to be available to the project.
