Or will there still be critical defect patches? Obviously I know there will be no more features added.

My understanding was that support was for two years from release. Which should cover you to March next year. But I'm struggling to find this written down anywhere.

Based on the patch history, I wouldn't be expecting many more patches before the two year mark. And probably nothing afterwards.

If you are on 5.6 its not much keeping you from going to 2017 or even 2018. 5.5 to 5.6 was large upgrade. But 5.6 to 2017 was pretty straightforward.

Unless you are morally opposed to subscriptions... 5.6 was the last version you could obtain a perpetual license for.

Unity 5.6 was released on March 31, 2017:

12 months of updates to 5.6 was promised, which would put their support commitment for it out to March 31, 2018:

Unity 5.6.6 was released on May 8, 2018, so they have already gone above and beyond by more than a month compared to what they committed to. 5.6 releases are done at this point though, unless you want to throw Unity a huge chunk of change to drag the 5.6 source out of mothballs to fix whatever your pet peeve issue is.
